Cold wave advisories were forecast for most inland areas and were set to take effect at 9 pm on 21 October, Yonhap and Asia Economy reported. Yonhap said an advisory is issued between October and April when the morning low is expected to fall 10 degrees or more from the day before, to 3 degrees or below, and to be at least 3 degrees under the seasonal norm. Dong-A Ilbo and Maeil Business referred to the measure as cold wave alerts. [ 2 , 3 , 5 , 7 ]

Frost was expected in many inland areas. Yonhap and Dong-A Ilbo named eastern Gyeonggi, inland and mountain Gangwon, North Chungcheong and northeastern North Jeolla among the places where ice could form, along with parts of Gyeongbuk. Outlets urged preparation against cold damage to crops. Yonhap and Asia Economy put the gap between morning and daytime temperatures at 15 degrees or more, while Korea Economic Daily, Dong-A Ilbo and Maeil Business said around 15 degrees. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 5 , 7 ]

Forecast lows and highs for major cities were Seoul 5 and 16 degrees, Incheon 3 and 15, Daejeon 3 and 17, Gwangju 8 and 17, Daegu 5 and 17, Ulsan 7 and 18, and Busan 10 and 19. Maeil Business added Chuncheon at 1 and 16, Gangneung at 6 and 16, Jeonju at 5 and 17, and Jeju at 14 and 19. It said cold air moving south from the northwest left temperatures 2 to 6 degrees below normal. [ 2 , 3 , 7 ]

Wind and wave warnings were also in force at sea. Yonhap said winds of 30 to 65 km/h and waves of 1.5 to 4.0 metres were expected in the outer seas south of Jeju and in the eastern outer South Sea, with waves up to 5.0 metres south of Jeju. Dong-A Ilbo said high swells on the east coast could wash over rocks and breakwaters, and quoted the weather agency as urging people to look after their health and avoid approaching the coast. Maeil Business said a strong wind warning covered the Jeju mountains, with gusts of 90 km/h or more until dawn. [ 2 , 5 , 7 ]

Yonhap and Asia Economy said temperatures would stay below normal until the morning of 23 October, then return to normal levels from the daytime. On Sunday 25 October they were expected to be slightly above normal. Yonhap gave the normal range as lows of 5 to 14 degrees and highs of 19 to 22 degrees. Yonhap's later short reports said 22 October would be mostly clear. [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 6 ]

Why it matters

Outlets urged attention to health because of the large swing between morning and daytime temperatures, and to protecting crops from cold damage. Wind and wave warnings at sea also led outlets to call for care around coasts and on ships.
