Incheon Transit Corporation said on 21 October that it had completed the subway Wi-Fi upgrade pilot project, carried out with the Ministry of Science and ICT and the three mobile carriers SK Telecom, KT and LG Uplus, and that 5G-based Wi-Fi now serves all cars on Incheon subway Lines 1 and 2. Several outlets described it as the first such service in the country. [ 1 , 2 , 4 , 5 , 7 , 9 ]

Under the project, Wi-Fi equipment based on LTE backhaul was replaced with 5G-based equipment. The work covered 358 cars: 272 on Line 1 (34 train sets) and 86 on Line 2 (43 train sets). Newsis and Kyunghyang Shinmun reported that access point devices and old power cables were also replaced. Maeil Business explained that backhaul is the link through which access points on a train exchange data with outside base stations, and that LTE backhaul has 20-40 MHz of bandwidth while 5G backhaul uses 100 MHz in the 3.5 GHz band. The corporation said average downlink speed rose from 83.2 Mbps to 215-285 Mbps, more than three times higher. Seoul Economic Daily said the 83.2 Mbps figure dated from a 2025 quality assessment. Newsis added that results can differ depending on the usage environment. [ 1 , 2 , 4 , 7 ]

To mark the launch, the ministry held an event on Line 2 on 21 October. Vice Minister Ryu Je-myeong, Rep. Lee Hoon-ki of the Democratic Party, Incheon Mayor Park Chan-dae and corporation president Choi Jeong-gyu attended, along with 11 citizen participants. They rode seven stations and tried web surfing, social media and video. The ministry said response was faster and that high-definition video played without interruption even with many users connected. A citizen participant quoted by Maeil Business said watching without buffering should make commuting more satisfying. [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 9 ]

Chosun Ilbo reported that 5G subway Wi-Fi had until now reached only some carriers' users on some routes, whereas on Lines 1 and 2 users of all three carriers can use it. Seoul Economic Daily said Incheon was ahead of Seoul and Busan, citing its smaller fleet of 358 cars and pressure from the National Assembly committee for better quality. [ 5 , 7 ]

Lee Hoon-ki said the aim is to cut citizens' telecom cost burden by guaranteeing the performance of free Wi-Fi, and he hopes the change spreads beyond Seoul and the capital region. Kyunghyang Shinmun reported that his 2025 audit measurements found speeds of around 10 Mbps for most carriers. Vice Minister Ryu said the ministry would give policy support, together with the carriers and regional transit corporations, so 5G subway Wi-Fi can spread nationwide. Maeil Business said the carriers' CEOs agreed in April with the science minister to improve subway Wi-Fi, and held a follow-up meeting in July. [ 1 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 9 ]
