Air defence forces shot down three drones over the Leningrad region on the morning of 21 October, Governor Alexander Drozdenko said. TASS, Interfax, Kommersant and RIA Novosti all reported the figure, and all said there were no casualties. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

Drozdenko wrote in Max: "Отбой беспилотной опасности в Ленинградской области. Сбито три БПЛА противника. Жертв нет. Благодарю силы ПВО за работу", according to Interfax. He had earlier said that a drone attack danger had been declared in the Luga district of the region. [ 2 , 4 ]

Rosaviatsia said all restrictions on flight servicing had been lifted for the airports of Pskov and St Petersburg's Pulkovo, Interfax reported. Kommersant also reported that Rosaviatsia had cancelled the restrictions at the St Petersburg and Pskov airports. [ 2 , 3 ]

Kommersant said the drone danger warning was announced soon after a plane carrying Steve Witkoff, described as the US president's special envoy, arrived at Pulkovo. The outlet's headline placed the downing after Witkoff's arrival. RIA Novosti's headline described the drones as Ukrainian, while the governor's quoted words refer to them as enemy drones. [ 3 , 4 ]

Why it matters

The documents give no basis for wider consequences beyond the lifting of the airport restrictions. Kommersant linked the timing of the drone warning to the arrival of US special envoy Steve Witkoff at Pulkovo.
