Russia's Defence Ministry announced on 21 October that units of the Vostok group had liberated the settlement of Chervony Yar in the Zaporizhzhia region. RIA Novosti quoted the ministry as saying the units "continued advancing into the depth of enemy defences" before taking the settlement. TASS carried the report at 12:38 local time and RIA Novosti at 12:40. [ 1 , 2 ]
Vedomosti, a business outlet, reported at 12:53 that Russian forces had established control over the village of Chervony Yar, citing the ministry, and said Vostok units were responsible. It added that Vostok units took the village of Tymoshevka in the same region on 20 October. It also listed earlier claims: on 17 October the Zapad group took Palamarevka and Kovalevka in the Kharkiv region, and on 16 October the Sever group took Varvarovka and Nikolaevka in the same region. At 15:45 TASS published a headline saying the liberation of Yulyevka and Chervony Yar had been called a tactical success of Russian forces. Its summary said Viktor Yemelyanenko, chairman of the Zaporizhzhia region legislative assembly, stated that assault troops of Vostok and Dnepr are preparing for the next offensive operation. RIA Novosti's daily roundup, published at 18:32, named both Chervony Yar and Yulyevka as liberated on 21 October. The documents give no further detail on Yulyevka. [ 4 , 5 ]
At 02:32 on 22 October TASS reported that Chervony Yar had been a staging area for Ukrainian forces. According to the summary, Ukrainian troops distributed groups from there to several settlements, which Russian security structures said. The documents contain no Ukrainian statement on Chervony Yar and no independent confirmation of the Russian claims. [ 6 ]
Why it matters
The documents are Russian outlets repeating the Russian ministry's account, and none carries a Ukrainian response. They show Russian officials presenting the capture as a step in continuing operations, with further offensives being prepared.
