Google, Constellation sign 3.59GW power deal with 890MW of new nuclear

🇨🇳 China 07:57 Energía Empresas Tecnología2 actualizado hace 6 h primera información de IT之家

En breve

Google and US energy company Constellation signed a long-term strategic energy agreement totalling 3.59GW, of which 890MW is new nuclear capacity under a 20-year power purchase agreement, IT Home and cnBeta reported. The nuclear portion comes from upgrading 11 existing Constellation reactors, with Google funding work that cnBeta valued at more than $4.3bn. The remaining 2.7GW is a 15-year supply agreement drawing on Constellation's generation assets in the PJM grid.

Google and US energy company Constellation have signed a long-term strategic energy cooperation agreement with a total scale of 3.59GW, according to IT Home and cnBeta. CLS reported that the deal adds 890MW of new nuclear capacity to the PJM grid as part of a long-term power transaction. IT Home and cnBeta both said that 890MW portion is new nuclear capacity purchased by Google under a 20-year power purchase agreement, expected to come online between 2028 and 2032. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

The nuclear capacity is not being reallocated from existing plants, cnBeta reported; instead, Constellation will upgrade 11 of its nuclear units with Google's financial backing. cnBeta said those units are located in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, while IT Home described them only as spanning multiple states. According to cnBeta, Constellation expects more than $4.3bn in new investment for equipment and technical upgrades, and the first upgraded unit is expected to supply additional power to the grid in 2028. IT Home reported the construction work will create about 7,200 jobs. [ 2 , 3 ]

The remaining 2.7GW is handled differently. IT Home and cnBeta said this portion is covered by a 15-year energy supply agreement and is not tied to a specific generation method, coming instead from Constellation's generation assets within the PJM grid. cnBeta described this as giving Constellation long-term revenue certainty for existing facilities, while Google secures stable supply for years ahead. [ 2 , 3 ]

The two companies also expanded their technology cooperation. IT Home reported that Constellation agreed a five-year extended technology alliance with Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise aimed at building an “energy AI” blueprint to speed up capacity delivery, optimise asset dispatch and protect critical infrastructure. The companies also signed a strategic framework agreement to assess opportunities for developing new clean energy generation, storage and demand response technology across the United States, IT Home said. [ 2 ]

cnBeta placed the deal in the context of rising electricity demand from AI data centres, saying the agreement is among the largest power purchases by a US technology company in recent years. It reported that PJM management has proposed a “Bring Your Own Power” approach that would require data centres connecting to the grid to secure their own new power sources, or risk remote disconnection at peak times. PJM covers 13 US states plus Washington, D.C., and serves about 67 million people, cnBeta said, and it described Constellation as one of the largest US nuclear operators. [ 3 ]

Neither document gave a total contract value, the exact list of upgraded units, or the Google facilities the power will serve. [ 2 , 3 ]

Por qué importa

The deal shows large technology companies contracting directly with power producers to secure decades of supply for AI data centres, with cnBeta describing a shift from a chip shortage to a power shortage. cnBeta also linked the agreement to PJM's proposed “Bring Your Own Power” approach, under which data centres would have to secure their own new generation. The arrangement may serve as a template in which tech firms lock in long-term demand so energy companies can invest in new capacity.

Aún sin aclarar

  • The exact list of nuclear units and the number of states involved beyond cnBeta's mention of Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey Only cnBeta names the states; IT Home says only that the 11 units span multiple states.
  • What the more than $4.3bn figure covers and the full commercial terms of the deal The investment figure appears only in cnBeta, and neither document gives a total contract value.
  • Where the agreement was announced and which Google facilities the power will serve The documents say Google announced the deal but give no city, and do not specify the data centres involved.
  • Which generation types supply the 2.7GW portion IT Home says the electricity is not bound to a specific generation method, so the mix is not stated.

Qué dicen los medios locales

Medios económicosCLS carried a short feed item focused on the headline figure of 890MW of new nuclear capacity added to the PJM grid as part of a long-term power transaction, without detail on cost, sites or the wider 3.59GW package. [ 1 ]
Medios tecnológicosThe two technology outlets treated the deal as a major AI infrastructure story, stressing the total 3.59GW scale, the split between new nuclear and existing generation, the upgrade of 11 reactors, the more than $4.3bn investment figure, and the framing that data centres are facing a power rather than chip constraint.
