South Korea's Ministry of the Interior and Safety said on 8 October that it will hold the 580th Hangeul Day ceremony at 10:00 on 9 October at the Grand Theater of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Jongno-gu, Seoul, under the theme "Hangeul by my side" (내 곁에 한글). About 1,200 people are expected, including Hangeul-related groups, representatives from across society, the diplomatic corps in Korea, citizens and students. [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]
According to the ministry, the theme expresses thanks to Hangeul for making it easy for people to convey meaning to one another in daily life. This year marks the 580th anniversary of the promulgation of Hunminjeongeum and the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Hangeul Day, first set up as "Gagya Day" in 1926. [ 3 , 4 ]
Ten people who contributed to spreading and developing Hangeul will receive government honours. The late Seok Geum-ho (석금호), former chairman of the board of Sandoll (산돌), who devoted his life to developing and spreading Hangeul fonts, will be posthumously awarded the Silver Crown Order of Cultural Merit. Baek Tae-hyun (백태현), vice president of Central Asian Korean University (중앙아시아한국대학), who has trained Korean studies specialists at universities in Central Asia for about 30 years, will receive the Jade Crown Order of Cultural Merit. [ 3 , 4 ]
The ceremony opens with a performance featuring a media art video based on the heaven, earth and human principles of Hunminjeongeum and a Hangeul group dance by young performers. During the national rites, actor Choi Su-hyeong (최수형), who played Choe Hyeon-bae in the original musical "Oesol" (외솔), will read the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and sing the national anthem with a children's choir. A theme video, "Hangeul by my side, continuing 100 years", will follow. [ 3 , 4 ]
The celebratory performance, the musical "Always, Hangeul by my side", traces how Hangeul, born of King Sejong's love for the people, has come down to the present day; Newsis reported that it closes with a grand chorus of King Sejong, citizens and a children's choir. The three cheers of "manse" will be led by Lee Ju-hwa (이주화), who developed a Hangeul puzzle app for foreigners, student Jeong Ye-eun (정예은), grand prize winner of the 2026 King Sejong National Hangeul Calligraphy Contest, and Choi Hong-sik (최홍식), president of the King Sejong Memorial Society. [ 3 , 4 ]
