The 2026 Naju Yeongsangang Festival opened on Oct 7 at Yeongsangang Garden in Naju and runs through Oct 11, with free admission. Organisers expanded the flower garden to about 120,000 pyeong (about 390,000 sq m) from roughly 70,000 pyeong last year, planting cosmos, kochia, sunflowers, zinnias and cockscomb along the river. The programme adds musicals, a citizen procession and family activities, with free shuttle buses and a receipt-lottery scheme aimed at local shops.

The 2026 Naju Yeongsangang Festival opened on Oct 7 at Yeongsangang Garden in Naju and runs for five days through Oct 11, according to Maeil Business and Seoul Economic Daily. Admission is free, Maeil Business reported. The city presented the event as the signature programme of the 2026 Naju Visit Year. [ 2 , 3 ]

The main change this year is the size of the flower garden. Newsis reported it was expanded to about 120,000 pyeong from roughly 70,000 pyeong last year, and Maeil Business put the new area at about 390,000 sq m. Cosmos, kochia, sunflowers, zinnias and cockscomb were planted along the Yeongsangang river, the outlets reported, with Seoul Economic Daily saying the planting is spread along walking routes so that different views appear along the way and that water-side lighting extends the garden into the evening. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

The performance programme leans on Naju’s history and local tales. Maeil Business reported that the opening night featured the musical “Queen, Janghwa”, about Goryeo founder Wang Geon and Naju-born Queen Janghwa, a work first staged last year and revised for this run. On Oct 8, the Naju City Choir performs “Arangsa Abisa — The Legend of Angam Rock”, based on a tale tied to the Angam rock on the Yeongsangang, followed by a musical drama show with Jo Kwon, Ivy and Michael Lee, according to Maeil Business and Seoul Economic Daily. On Hangul Day, Oct 9, about 300 citizens take part in a re-enactment procession of the Naju magistrate’s inauguration, and a natural-dyeing fashion show features model Park Dool-sun and citizen models, Maeil Business reported. [ 2 , 3 ]

Family programming was expanded. Seoul Economic Daily and Maeil Business reported that the children’s role-play programme Kizania grew from four locations last year to seven, and that Pinkfong and Tinipling sing-along shows are each scheduled twice. Chef Ahn Yu-seong, a 2026 Naju Visit Year ambassador, hosts a food programme using Naju rice and local ingredients, the two outlets reported. Maeil Business said the final day includes an air show by the Air Force aerobatic team Black Eagles over Yeongsangang Garden, the 2026 MBN National Naju Marathon at Naju General Sports Park, and a creative dance piece “Daenggimeori” about the 1929 Naju Station incident and the student independence movement. To address last year’s congestion, free direct shuttle buses connect three zones — Naju City Hall, KEPCO KDN and Yeongsanpo Dunchi Sports Park — to the festival site at 10-minute intervals, with visitors encouraged to park in outer lots and ride in, according to Seoul Economic Daily and Maeil Business. Maeil Business also reported a receipt-linked lottery: receipts for spending of 30,000 won or more at Naju shops, excluding the festival site, between Oct 1 and Oct 11 can be exchanged at the venue for instant lottery tickets, with 120 million won in Naju Love gift certificates as prizes. Mayor Yoon Byung-tae said the focus was on having visitors experience Naju’s history and culture deeply and stay more than a day, and on turning the festival’s energy into a virtuous cycle for the wider local economy, Maeil Business reported. [ 2 , 3 ]

Seoul Economic Daily reported that last year’s festival drew 520,000 visitors over five days, calling the turnout a success while noting that traffic and parking difficulties remained a task; it said the city concentrated on fixing that this year. The documents do not state how many visitors are expected this year. [ 2 ]

Почему это важно

The festival is billed as the signature event of the 2026 Naju Visit Year, and city officials say the aim is a stay-and-spend model that draws visitors into local restaurants and shops in the old downtown, Yeongsanpo and Bitgaram-dong. Last year’s five-day run drew 520,000 visitors but left traffic and parking congestion as an unresolved problem, so this year’s expanded shuttle service and consumption lottery are the test. It is a local tourism event, so its significance outside the province is limited.

Пока неясно

  • Whether this year’s expanded shuttle service and outer parking will resolve the traffic and parking congestion reported at last year’s festival. The documents describe the measures and say congestion was a problem last year, but give no outcome for this year’s run, which was still under way when they were published.
  • An opening-night drone light show and fireworks display, and the appearance of singer Park Ji-hyun and musical actor Hong Ji-min. These details appear in only one document, so they are single-source.
  • How many visitors are expected this year. The documents give only last year’s figure of 520,000 visitors over five days, from one outlet.

Что пишут местные СМИ

Деловые СМИAll three documents are business-type outlets, and all three covered the festival as a city tourism project with a commercial angle. Newsis led on the enlarged flower garden, quoting the expansion from about 70,000 to 120,000 pyeong. Seoul Economic Daily framed it as a move from a “see-and-leave” festival to one where visitors stay, take part and spend, and stressed the city’s plan to turn Yeongsangang Garden into a four-season tourism asset and to fix last year’s traffic and parking problems. Maeil Business reported the Oct 7 opening in the most detail, running through the day-by-day programme, the free shuttle expansion and the receipt-lottery scheme, and quoted Naju Mayor Yoon Byung-tae saying the focus was on letting visitors experience Naju’s history and culture and stay more than a day.
