Kim Ji-yong (김지용), nominated as the first chief of South Korea's serious-crime investigation agency, is scheduled to face a parliamentary confirmation hearing on October 14. The public administration and security committee will conduct the hearing amid disagreements within the governing camp over the nominee's suitability and commitment to prosecution reform. Critics within the Democratic Party have objected to Kim's past record as a prosecutor. Newsis reported concerns that Kim supported prosecutors retaining supplementary investigation powers and signed a statement opposing the 2020 suspension of then prosecutor-general Yoon Suk Yeol. Some critics have described Kim as aligned with Yoon and called for the nomination to be withdrawn. [ 3 ]
Gyeonggi Governor Choo Mi-ae (추미애) reiterated opposition during the October 13 parliamentary audit of the provincial government, saying she considered Kim unsuitable for the post. Kim has denied allegations concerning the nominee's record, according to Asia Economy. Kim said a demotion followed the first prosecution appointments after Yoon's government took office and denied receiving personnel benefits through personal connections.
