On 5 October RIA Novosti reported that a Swedish Air Force aircraft was conducting reconnaissance over the Black Sea. TASS reported shortly afterwards that the flight was radar reconnaissance and that the aircraft had taken off from the Malmen military base. Later that afternoon TASS, citing a source in European Union air traffic control services, said the aircraft had spent more than four hours over the sea, flying west to east and back in its southern part. On 6 October TASS reported that the Swedish aircraft was flying a second day and identified it for the first time as a Gulfstream S102B Korpen that had taken off from an airfield in Bucharest. TASS said later that day that the aircraft spent almost seven hours over the Black Sea. On 7 October TASS reported that a NATO aircraft was conducting reconnaissance, taking off from Constanta airfield, while RIA Novosti reported that a Swedish aircraft had begun reconnaissance. By the afternoon TASS said two aircraft — the Swedish Gulfstream S102B Korpen and the US-registered NATO Bombardier Artemis II — had spent almost seven hours over the sea. Vedomosti's account said the two aircraft cruised at altitudes of 10.5 to 13.5 km, west to east, outside the routes assigned to civil aviation, and did not enter the airspace of any country other than Romania. It also reported that two NATO reconnaissance aircraft had been seen over the Black Sea's neutral waters on 18 September: the Bombardier Artemis II, from its permanent base in Constanta, and a British Boeing RC-135W Rivet Joint, from an airbase on the Greek island of Crete.
