Moscow mayor: 650 drones flew toward region overnight, 9,994 since Sept 1
Version 2: New figures were added for the night of Oct 5-6, with Sobyanin reporting 650 drones flying toward the Moscow region and 105 destroyed on approach, along with the overnight suspension of flights at all Moscow airports.
In short
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 650 drones flew toward the Moscow region between 20:30 on Oct 5 and 05:00 on Oct 6, with 105 destroyed on approach to the capital and most of the rest shot down at far lines. All Moscow airports restricted operations overnight, and at the time of publication the measure remained in force at Sheremetyevo, Vedomosti reported. Sobyanin had earlier put the flow toward Moscow at 9,994 drones for Sept 1 to Oct 5.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said 650 drones flew toward the Moscow region between 20:30 on Oct 5 and 05:00 on Oct 6, according to TASS, Interfax and Vedomosti. Sobyanin said most of them were destroyed by air defence at far lines and that 105 were destroyed on approach to Moscow, Interfax and Vedomosti reported. Interfax said Sobyanin had earlier reported the destruction of 93 drones attacking the capital overnight. [ 5 , 6 , 7 ]
Moscow airports restricted operations during the night. Interfax reported that Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo and Zhukovsky were not accepting or dispatching flights. Vedomosti reported that Rosaviatsia restricted operations at all Moscow airports, and said that at the time of publication the measure was in force at Sheremetyevo. [ 6 , 7 ]
The overnight statement followed a monthly figure the mayor published the previous afternoon. Sobyanin said 9,994 drones flew toward the Moscow region between Sept 1 and Oct 5, a figure carried by TASS, RIA Novosti, RBC and Kommersant within minutes of each other. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]
Kommersant reported that, according to Sobyanin, Ukrainian armed forces launched about 9.9 thousand drones toward Moscow over that period and that most were shot down at far lines. The newspaper said 862 drones were destroyed on approach to Moscow, citing the mayor's Telegram channel, and that Sobyanin had reported nine drones shot down near the city on the morning of Oct 5. Vedomosti described the drones in both the monthly and overnight counts as Ukrainian. [ 4 , 7 ]
Kommersant said the “toward Moscow” figure reflects the overall flow of drones that is then counted at different interception lines, rather than the number of targets that reached the city limits, with those destroyed near the capital listed separately. It noted that interception away from the city does not rule out consequences: on July 18, 2026, it said, Domodedovo airport suspended accepting and dispatching aircraft because of drone danger, and airspace restrictions were in force near the airport. [ 4 ]
Why it matters
The figures give a municipal official's count of drone traffic toward the Russian capital over a month and overnight, indicating the scale of air-defence activity around Moscow. The closure of all Moscow airports overnight, and Domodedovo's earlier suspension cited by Kommersant, point to the disruption drone activity causes to civil aviation.

Still unclear
- How many drones reached the Moscow city limits. No document gives this figure; Kommersant said the “toward Moscow” number is the total flow counted at different interception lines, not targets that reached the city.
- Why Interfax reported an earlier figure of 93 drones destroyed overnight while the later figure was 105. Interfax carried both numbers in the same report without explaining the difference between the earlier count and the final one.
- Whether the airport restrictions had been lifted anywhere other than Sheremetyevo. Vedomosti said only that at the time of publication the measure was in force at Sheremetyevo, without stating the status of the other airports.
