South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said on October 10 that he would continue using social media and visiting local communities despite criticism of his communication style. Writing on X, he said visits to backstreet communities with minimal security, communication on social media and exchanges in residents' own language would continue even if critics described them as lacking dignity or authority. He explained the decision by saying that the president is the public's foremost servant. [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]
Lee recalled former President Roh Moo-hyun, whom he said had been criticised and mocked for communicating with people through online comments. He also referred to accounts that Roh had refrained from visiting markets because security arrangements and advance inspections could inconvenience the public. Lee said politics and power should reach people with little power or wealth. Such people need more attention and support than influential figures in high positions, he added. [ 4 , 5 , 6 ]
The president cited his pledge during his first presidential bid to remain beside the public and said his resolve had never changed. He described exchanges with people who have fewer resources or are marginalised as valuable moments that remind him of the responsibility of running the country. Yonhap reported that Lee has recently expressed views on social media about the qualifications of a nominee to lead the serious-crimes investigation agency, prosecution reform, the return of North Korean prisoners, diplomatic friction with Ukraine and housing policy.
