En breve

HD Hyundai said it delivered the world's first container ship that does not require workers to lash containers to the deck by hand, a 13,000 TEU vessel built for an unnamed French shipping company. The ship uses an extended cell-guide design plus a standardised portable bench that can be handled by port cranes, a system the company says cuts container loss and raises deck cargo weight by more than 10%. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries developed and demonstrated the core technology and HD Hyundai Samho handled detailed design and construction.

HD Hyundai said on October 6 that it had delivered the world's first container ship that does not require workers to lash containers to the deck by hand. The vessel, a 13,000 TEU class container ship, was built for a French shipping company, according to the Seoul Economic Daily and Yonhap. A TEU is one 20-foot container. Newsis also reported the delivery, describing it as a world first. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

On existing large container ships, crews use lashing equipment to secure containers manually. Under the lashing-free design, that work is removed entirely, HD Hyundai said. The company said HD Hyundai Heavy Industries developed and demonstrated the core technology, while HD Hyundai Samho carried out detailed design and construction. Yonhap reported that the hybrid type of the lashing-free technology was partially applied to the delivered ship; the Seoul Economic Daily described the ship as using the hybrid method without saying the application was partial. [ 1 , 3 ]

The system works by extending the cell guides that hold containers in vertical alignment above the deck. Large hatch covers previously blocked that route, so HD Hyundai Heavy Industries developed a standardised portable bench that fits between the cell guides and, being the same size as a 40-foot container, can be lifted by ordinary port cranes. Containers stowed outside the cell guides are fixed directly to the hull using a newly developed twistlock rooting system, the company said. HD Hyundai expects the design to speed automation and unmanned operation of container terminals and of land and sea logistics more broadly. [ 1 , 3 ]

According to the company, the ship can carry more than 10 percent more deck cargo by weight than comparable existing vessels, while supporting containers firmly in heavy seas and winds, which HD Hyundai says helps prevent cargo loss and marine pollution. A sea trial in September found markedly less vibration than on ships using hatch covers and lashing bridges, the company said. HD Hyundai said it is also developing a next-generation version with added watertight functions. [ 1 , 3 ]

The Seoul Economic Daily reported that the technology was presented as South Korea's representative technology at the International Maritime Organization's cargo and container transport sub-committee in 2024, that domestic and foreign patents have been registered, and that it won this year's Jang Yeong-sil Award. Ryu Hong-ryeol, head of the technology division at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, said the company plans to extend lashing-free technology to small and medium-sized ships, adding that it will keep developing technologies in safety, loading efficiency and automation to raise its order competitiveness. Por qué importa

The delivery is the first commercial application of a Korean-developed cargo-securing system, and HD Hyundai says the approach is aimed at automating loading and unloading at container terminals. If adopted more widely, the design could affect how container ships are built and operated, and how quickly ports move boxes. The company frames the technology as a selling point in a competitive shipbuilding market.

Aún sin aclarar

  • The name of the French shipping company that ordered the vessel is not given. Neither document identifies the buyer; both refer only to a French shipping company.
  • How much of the lashing-free system is applied to this ship. Yonhap says the hybrid type was partially applied, while the Seoul Economic Daily describes it as a hybrid application without saying it is partial; the documents do not quantify the coverage.
  • Independent verification of the claim that this is the world's first such ship. The claim comes from HD Hyundai in all three documents, with no outside confirmation cited.
