The «Trinity» icon painted by Andrei Rublev has been returned to the iconostasis of the Trinity Cathedral at the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, according to reports by RBC, Meduza and Kommersant. RBC’s sources said the icon was put back on 5 October, after work on the climate display case that holds it was completed. Meduza and Kommersant both attributed the 5 October date to RBC’s sources. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Kommersant reported that the icon had been taken out of the iconostasis in mid-September and moved to the Lavra’s restoration workshops so its condition could be checked, and that a printed copy stood in its place in the meantime. RBC and Meduza likewise reported that a typographic copy was used while the icon was away. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
The documents give differing explanations for the removal. The Moscow Patriarchate said the icon had been taken from the iconostasis and that specialists from the Tretyakov Gallery were carrying out a «planned check», according to Meduza. Tretyakov Gallery director Olga Galaktionova said the icon was removed because of a «correction» of the capsule’s condition and stated that restoration was not under discussion, Kommersant reported. Meduza, citing «Echo» and religion researcher Ksenia Luchenko, reported that the climate camera holding the icon had broken, that the icon was being kept at 80% humidity while specialists say 50–55% is required, and that equipment failed again soon after a specialist from Germany left. [ 2 , 3 ]
The icon was painted in 1422–1427 and was kept in the Tretyakov Gallery from 1929, Meduza reported; a presidential decree transferred it to the Russian Orthodox Church in spring 2023, after which it was brought to the Lavra. Kommersant reported that the «Trinity» has been in the Lavra’s free use since summer 2024, that the return does not change its legal status — it remains state property — and that the Tretyakov Gallery keeps operational management of the monument. [ 2 , 3 ]
Under those arrangements, Kommersant reported, the gallery’s specialists must check the icon’s condition once every three months and carry out a full examination on a restoration table each year, with monitoring conducted at the Lavra. The newspaper noted that the wooden base of the «Trinity» is hygroscopic and that swings in humidity can cause the boards to swell, leading to detachment of the ground layer and damage to the paint layer, which the armoured capsule is intended to prevent. Почему это важно
The icon is one of Russia’s best-known religious works and its transfer to the Lavra has made its storage conditions a recurring subject of public scrutiny. The documents show continued disagreement over whether the removal was routine maintenance or a response to an equipment failure, and the Lavra’s access to the icon remains governed by conditions set by the Tretyakov Gallery.
