“Tenzing,” an Apple Studios film directed by Jennifer Peedom, tells the life story of Tenzing Norgay, the Sherpa mountaineer who with Edmund Hillary made the first confirmed ascent of Mount Everest. IGN reports the film premieres in select theaters on October 9 and streams globally on Apple TV on October 16; the AP copy carried by The Seattle Times says it opens Friday in theaters before streaming October 16 on Apple TV+. [ 1 , 3 ]
The documents state that Norgay and Hillary reached the summit on May 29, 1953. The first image ever taken of a person standing atop Everest was of Norgay, per the AP account, which says Hillary took out his camera and photographed his fellow climber waving an ice ax tied with flags for Britain, India, Nepal and the United Nations. [ 1 , 3 ]
Peedom said Norgay’s story “is the ultimate underdog heroic story but had been pushed to the margins,” adding that while Everest became an icon of human achievement, “the story of one of the first men to climb to the summit was largely unknown.” The AP reports the film chronicles Norgay’s path to Everest and the 1953 ascent, with both climbers described as outsiders in a British expedition led by Col. John Hunt. [ 3 ]
Tom Hiddleston plays Hillary and Willem Dafoe plays Hunt, according to the AP. Norgay, a role shared across time frames, is principally played by Genden Phuntsok, a Chinese actor of Tibetan descent making his first Hollywood film; Norgay’s son Norbu Tenzing is an executive producer, and cultural consultants Dr. Lhakpa Norbu Sherpa and Dr. Nima Namgyal Sherpa were involved, with most Sherpa roles played by real mountaineering Tibetan people. [ 3 ]
IGN’s review describes the film as following Norgay’s boyhood as a yak herder in the shadow of Mount Everest, his departure from the Tibetan Plateau to Nepal and later Darjeeling, and his reliance on his Buddhist faith, noting that he faced hardship before joining the 1953 expedition. The review also notes that the film’s production notes state “creative license needed to be taken in certain areas to shape this complex history into a compelling cinematic narrative.” [ 1 ]
Почему это важно
The release is a large-scale studio treatment of a figure the coverage says has received less attention than his climbing partner, with Norgay’s son Norbu Tenzing as an executive producer and Sherpa consultants involved. A global streaming date on Apple TV+ gives the story an international audience beyond Everest-focused documentaries.
