Suncheon Maesandong mission site to be registered as national cultural heritage
In short
The Korea Heritage Service said it will register the Suncheon Maesandong modern and contemporary historical and cultural space, along with seven individual heritages inside it, as nationally registered cultural heritage. The site in Maegok-dong, Suncheon, covers about 72,000 square metres and was a base for American Southern Presbyterian mission work in the Honam region in the early 20th century. After a 30-day comment period and deliberation by the National Heritage Committee, registration would make it the tenth such space in the country.

The Korea Heritage Service said it will register the Suncheon Maesandong modern and contemporary historical and cultural space, together with seven individual heritages inside it, as nationally registered cultural heritage. Asia Economy and Yonhap reported the notice was given on October 7, while Kyunghyang Shinmun said the notice would be issued on October 12. According to Yonhap, the area covers about 72,000 square metres in Maegok-dong, Suncheon. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]
The space was created by the American Southern Presbyterian mission board in the early 20th century as a base for mission work in the Honam region, according to the reports. Yonhap explained that the Southern Presbyterian Church is a Protestant denomination established mainly in the southern United States. The heritage service said the site retains cultural heritage formed around mission, education, medical care and housing functions and has high historical and architectural value as a district-level heritage. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]
The seven individual heritages given notice include the Rogers missionary house, the old wall of the Maesandong mission village and the Anryeoksan Hospital isolation ward. Yonhap reported that the Rogers house was the residence of missionary Rogers (1892–1967), the second director of Anryeoksan Hospital, and was built in a Western style using stone from the Suncheon area. The old wall marked the boundary between the traditional space centred on the Suncheonbu fortress and the mission area, the isolation ward is described as the only remaining facility connected to Anryeoksan Hospital, and the rehabilitation vocational training building was used for treating difficult diseases and for vocational education for people with disabilities, the agency said. The list also includes the sarangchae and anchae of the UBUja house, which show changes in modern hanok architecture, and the house of a Goesan clinic director, which retains 1960s landscaping. Kyunghyang Shinmun noted that the space is linked spatially and functionally to the former Suncheonbu fortress and already holds five designated or registered cultural heritages, including the George Watts Memorial Hall of the former Southern Presbyterian Church in Suncheon and the Maesan Hall of Maesan Middle School, and that the area is a tourist attraction. The heritage service said it will collect opinions during a 30-day notice period, then finalise the registration after deliberation by the National Heritage Committee. Final registration would be the tenth such case nationwide; Yonhap said nine places, including Mokpo, Gunsan and Yeongju, are already registered as modern historical and cultural spaces or under similar names. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]
Asia Economy reported that the notice was the first result since the designation application process was changed from a periodic competition to a rolling submission system in February. A heritage service official told Yonhap that the agency will continue to discover and register district-level modern and contemporary cultural heritage with strong historical and academic value and will support its systematic preservation and use. [ 1 , 4 ]
Why it matters
If confirmed, the designation places the area under a national registration system that manages clusters of modern and contemporary heritage as a district rather than as single buildings. Kyunghyang Shinmun noted the area is already a tourist attraction, and the heritage service said it will support systematic preservation and use of such heritage, so the listing could affect both conservation rules and how the district is presented to visitors. The decision is not final until the committee deliberates.
