The LG Twins beat the Doosan Bears 7-5 at Jamsil Stadium in Seoul on Oct. 7 in the season’s last “Jamsil rivalry” game, a result that secured LG at least fourth place in the KBO League and confirmed Doosan in fifth, Yonhap and Chosun Ilbo reported. Yonhap and Hankook Ilbo put LG at 77 wins, 62 losses and 2 draws, three games ahead of Doosan at 73-65-5. [ 2 , 3 , 6 , 8 ]
According to Yonhap’s account, LG led 3-0 in the bottom of the second on Lee Jae-won’s three-run home run to center field after consecutive hits by Moon Jung-bin and Moon Bo-kyung. Starter Lim Chan-kyu gave up five runs in the top of the third as Doosan produced consecutive hits from Ahn Jae-seok and Junior Severino, a hit-by-pitch to Yang Eui-ji and further hits from Kim Min-seok and Kang Seung-ho. LG tied it 5-5 in the bottom of the third on Moon Bo-kyung’s two-run single. In the fifth, with two outs and runners on first and second, Lee Jae-won’s ball hit third base and bounced up; Ahn Jae-seok’s throw to first was an error and two runners scored to make the final margin. Lim Chan-kyu, 33, whom Yonhap described as having been an “LG child” fan, earned his 15th win with five innings, six hits, four strikeouts and five runs, moving into sole first place in wins. Choi Min-seok, his rival for the wins title, took the loss with 4⅔ innings, 10 hits, one walk, five strikeouts and seven runs (six earned), falling to 14-5; Yonhap said he would need a win against Lotte on Oct. 12 for a chance to share the wins title, while Chosun Ilbo described Lim as having secured it. Yonhap and Hankook Ilbo reported the game was LG’s last regular-season game at Jamsil Stadium, which will be demolished after this season with a new domed stadium built on the same site; the last regular-season game there is scheduled for Oct. 12 between Doosan and Lotte. Hankook Ilbo said the stadium opened on July 15, 1982, and that Doosan (including OB) leads LG (including MBC) 406-22-373 in all games there. It reported a sellout of 23,750 and a season home attendance of 1,622,238, the first time LG has drawn more than 1.6 million at home in a single season. [ 3 , 6 ]
Chosun Ilbo reported Doosan’s defeat confirmed it in fifth place regardless of its remaining game and that it will begin the postseason in the wild-card game. The outlet said Doosan finished ninth last season and has reached the wild card for the first time in two years. [ 8 , 11 ]
Chosun Ilbo quoted Lee Jae-won after the game, and Hankook Ilbo reported that LG legends present for the ceremonial first pitch looked back on the stadium: Lee Byung-kyu said he hit 30 home runs and stole 30 bases there and “I liked it here,” while Park Yong-taek recalled the 2013 final regular-season game, when the club clinched its first postseason berth in 11 years. [ 6 , 10 ]
Why it matters
The result settled the lower end of the KBO playoff seeding: LG cannot finish below fourth, and Doosan will have to start the postseason in the wild-card game. The game also closed out LG’s regular-season history at Jamsil Stadium, the 1982 venue due to be replaced by a domed ballpark, and drew the club’s first season home attendance above 1.6 million.
