Born Vishwanath Patekar, he started his career in Marathi theatre and made his film debut in Gaman in 1978. He played Baba in Mira Nair's Oscar-nominated Salaam Bombay! and won awards for Parinda (1989) and Krantiveer (1994); the role in Krantiveer earned him a National Film Award for Best Actor, The National reported.
