Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature "for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature," the Swedish Academy said on Thursday. The prize was announced by the academy in Stockholm and is worth 12 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million). [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]

Ingrid Carlberg, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, said she reached Carson by telephone shortly before the announcement and that the writer was in Iceland, "listening to the wind". Emirates 24|7 quoted Carlberg as saying, "She was very taken by surprise." The National quoted her as saying, "She was taken by surprise, but very happy. I can hear that in her voice." [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]

Emirates 24|7 attributed to the academy the statement that "almost all her literary production has centred upon the intersection between the philologist's obsession with words and the poet's desire for new meaning"; The National attributed the same words to Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature, during the announcement. According to Emirates 24|7, the academy also said Carson has identified the etymology of words as the starting point for all her work and that her translations from Classical Greek "may be regarded as independent works in their own right." [ 1 , 4 ]

Carson, 76, was born in Toronto; The National gives her year of birth as 1950, and Emirates 24|7 reported that she has held Icelandic citizenship since 2022. Emirates 24|7 said her work often blends verse, prose, dialogue and translation, while Gulf News said she draws on ancient Greek and Roman literature for works that often blend elements of poetry, essay and fiction. The National reported that she has spent four decades drawing on ancient mythology, poetry and philosophy to explore love, grief, desire and identity. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]

Her books named in the coverage include the verse novel "Autobiography of Red" from 1998; "Eros the Bittersweet"; "Men in the Off Hours", which Gulf News said won Canada's Griffin Prize for poetry in 2001; "The Beauty of the Husband" and "Nox"; and "Norma Jeane Baker of Troy" from 2019, a performance piece that mixes the stories of Helen of Troy in Euripides' play "Helen" and Marilyn Monroe. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]

Carson had been among the favourites to win this year's prize, according to bookmakers Ladbrokes, Emirates 24|7 reported. She succeeds Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, who won in 2025; The National noted that South Korean author Han Kang won in 2024 and said the award will be presented in Stockholm on December 10. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]

Why it matters

The award recognises Carson's combination of classical scholarship with poetry, fiction and other literary forms, according to The National. Emirates 24|7 reported that it places her beside past recipients such as Alexander Solzhenitsyn, Alice Munro and Ernest Hemingway.
