The Swedish Academy announced on October 8 that it would award the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature to Anne Carson, 76, a Canadian poet and writer, Asahi Shimbun, Sankei Shimbun and Kyodo News, carried by Nishi-Nippon Shimbun, reported. Mainichi Shimbun, Jiji Press, TBS NEWS DIG and Nippon TV News also reported the award. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 10 , 16 ]

According to Asahi and TBS NEWS DIG, the citation praised a bold and original body of work that, through playful dialogue with the classical tradition, created new forms in contemporary literature; TBS attributed the wording to the Nobel Committee. Sankei and Kyodo gave a shorter version, saying her bold and original works created new forms in contemporary literature. [ 3 , 4 , 10 , 16 ]

Carson is the first Canadian laureate since Alice Munro in 2013, Asahi, Sankei and Kyodo reported. Sankei and Kyodo said she is the 19th woman to receive the prize, following South Korean writer Han Kang in 2024. TBS NEWS DIG noted that no Japanese writer was chosen, after Yasunari Kawabata and Kenzaburo Oe. [ 3 , 4 , 10 , 16 ]

Born in Toronto in 1950, Carson studied ancient Greek in high school, guided by her Latin teacher according to Asahi, and earned a doctorate in classics from the University of Toronto in 1981. TBS NEWS DIG said she went on to teach at Princeton University in the United States, among other institutions. Asahi said she published the essay collection Eros the Bittersweet in 1986 and debuted as a poet in 1987 with the long poem Kinds of Water. [ 3 , 4 , 10 ]

Her 1998 work Autobiography of Red (赤の自伝) made her name, according to TBS NEWS DIG. Asahi and Yahoo! News Japan described it as a hybrid of poetry and the novel, and Asahi said it became an unusual bestseller. Sankei said it depicted contemporary homosexuality with elements of Greek myth, while Yahoo! News said it retold, as a romance, the myth of a monster and the hero Heracles told by the ancient Greek poet Stesichorus. Asahi reported that in 2001 she won Canada's Griffin Poetry Prize for Men in the Off Hours and the T.S. Eliot Prize, and that she won the National Book Critics Circle Award for the 2024 collection Wrong Norma (かみあわないノーマ). Asahi said she is also known as a translator of Sappho and Euripides; Yahoo! News described her as a translator of Greek tragedy. [ 3 , 4 , 7 , 10 ]

Asahi reported that a Japanese translation of Wrong Norma by Hiromitsu Koiso (小磯洋光) was published this year. Poet Natsumi Aoyagi (青柳菜摘), who planned and edited it, told Asahi that Carson's collections are books that will remain for a long time and that the award made her happy as a fellow creator. Asahi said the prize is 12 million Swedish kronor, about 189 million yen, and that the ceremony will be held in Stockholm on December 10. [ 3 ]
