Isaias strengthened into the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season as it moved toward the US Gulf Coast, according to reports on October 8. The National Hurricane Center forecast landfall along the northern Gulf Coast late Friday or early Saturday. Forecasters warned of damaging winds, flooding and storm surge, while coastal communities in Florida began evacuations and other preparations. [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]
The reports quoted differing wind and position figures. UPI cited the center's 01:00 CDT update, placing the storm about 445 miles south-southwest of the Mississippi River's mouth with sustained winds of 75 mph. UPI reported a hurricane warning from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the Bay/Gulf county line in Florida. The Seattle Times said storm surge and high tide could bring water levels of 5 to 7 feet in parts of Alabama and Mississippi. Okaloosa County announced mandatory evacuations for some coastal areas. Newsweek said these would begin at noon Thursday and also reported voluntary evacuation guidance in coastal Alabama. The Seattle Times reported that at least four Florida school districts had canceled classes for later in the week, communities were closing government offices and some Gulf oil wells had paused production.
