Uniqlo (ユニクロ), the casual clothing chain, said it will raise prices on 11 products on Nov 10. Outlets give the average increase as about 4%. The Kando Jacket (感動ジャケット) goes from 6,990 yen to 7,990 yen, including tax. Asahi Shimbun put that at about 14% for both men's and women's versions. [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 7 , 10 ]
Nikkei and Yomiuri said the Kando Pants (感動パンツ) rise from 3,990 yen to 4,990 yen. Asahi said the women's Kando Slim Pants and the men's Kando Pants each rise by about 25%, and that the 50-colour socks (50色ソックス) go from 290 yen to 390 yen. The bulk-buy sock offers are ending, and socks will be sold singly at 390 yen each. [ 3 , 4 , 10 ]
Uniqlo explained the change in a notice on its website. It said that despite efforts to cope with rising raw material and logistics costs and the continuing weak yen, it had to revise prices and service fees for some products. It said the roughly 4% rise was needed to keep up quality and supply products customers can use for a long time. [ 1 , 2 ]
Nikkei reported that the rise covers Uniqlo stores in Japan and that the company published a list of the affected products on its website. It said Fast Retailing (ファーストリテイリング), Uniqlo's parent, has about 700 partner factories abroad, including in China and Southeast Asia. Nikkei said the company had absorbed higher costs through streamlining production and logistics, but is now passing them on because of the fast-moving yen weakness. At its July earnings announcement, Chief Financial Officer Ken Okazaki (岡崎健) said currency hedging was continuing but conditions were getting harder, and that some autumn and winter goods would have to be raised, by a little under 4% on average. [ 3 ]
Nikkei and Yomiuri said autumn and winter price rises will continue from December. Nikkei quoted the company as saying the number of items would be limited. [ 3 , 4 ]
Uniqlo had already raised some prices in September. Nikkei named children's Warm Easy Pants and women's Ultra Stretch Leggings Pants, and several outlets said fees for shipping, trouser hemming and shirt sleeve alterations also went up. [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 7 , 10 ]
Outlets differ on the sock offer. Livedoor and Yahoo described a 3-pair bulk-buy at 990 yen, as did Asahi, while Nikkei, Yomiuri, Sankei and Tokyo Shimbun described a 4-pair colour-sock offer at 990 yen. All say singles will cost 390 yen. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 7 , 10 ]
Why it matters
Shoppers in Japan will pay more for the jacket, pants and socks from Nov 10. Nikkei and Yomiuri report that further autumn and winter increases are planned from December, so the rise may not be the last.
