A Self-Defense Forces large vehicle and a light passenger car collided head-on at about 7:00 a.m. on 20 October on the outbound lane of the Sendai-Hokubu Road in Rifu, Miyagi Prefecture, TBS reported, citing police. Sankei Shimbun reported that an SDF member called the 110 emergency number to say the vehicle had collided head-on with a light passenger car. [ 1 , 4 ]

According to the fire department, as cited by TBS and Yahoo! News Japan, the male driver of the light passenger car was confirmed dead at the scene. TBS said two of the four male SDF members in the vehicle were injured and taken to a hospital in Rifu. Sankei, citing the Miyagi prefectural police expressway unit, said the two SDF members, both men in their 20s, suffered bruises and other injuries and were taken to hospital. Yahoo! News Japan said the two were lightly hurt. [ 1 , 3 , 4 ]

The site is a straight section with one lane in each direction, Sankei said. TBS said poles stand in place of a median strip, and Sankei said the lanes were separated by poles meant to stop vehicles straying. TBS and Yahoo! News Japan said police believe one of the vehicles strayed into the oncoming lane. Sankei said prefectural police think that is possible and are investigating the cause in detail. Nippon TV said at 08:34 that it appeared one vehicle had crossed into the opposite lane but that details were not known, and it had no information on injuries. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

The Sendai-Hokubu Road was closed in both directions between Rifu Junction and Rifu Shirakashidai Interchange. Yahoo! News Japan said the closure had been in place since about 7:00 a.m., and Nippon TV said at 08:34 there was no prospect of lifting it. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

Outlets describe the SDF vehicle differently. TBS called it a large vehicle, Sankei a large cargo vehicle, and Yahoo! News Japan a Ground Self-Defense Force vehicle. Nippon TV's follow-up headlines at 11:07 and 12:04 called it an SDF truck and said one man died; the feed gave no further text. [ 1 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]
