United Arab Emirates University has launched the Desert by Design Competition for Desert Architecture and Urbanism Al Ain Edition 2026, in conjunction with its Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2026, according to the Abu Dhabi Media Office and Aletihad. The competition places the Al Ain Region at the centre of the design challenge, drawing on its environmental diversity, cultural richness and urban heritage, and invites students from higher education institutions across the UAE, as well as professionals, to develop proposals that respond to the region's natural environment and climate, its cultural roots and its future needs. [ 1 , 2 ]

Prof Mohamed Al Marzouqi, Dean of the College of Engineering, said the region “has an distinctive character shaped over a long history, giving it a well-established cultural, urban, and environmental character”. He said the competition aims to give students and professionals “a platform to present visions inspired by this distinctive character, expressed through a contemporary architectural language capable of responding to future aspirations”, and that it reflects the college's commitment to connecting academic knowledge with community and environmental issues. [ 1 , 2 ]

The competition is built around themes including culture, heritage, climate, public realm and future urban aspirations. It has two categories, Students and Early-Career Professionals. Eligible disciplines include architecture, architectural engineering, urbanism, urban design, planning, landscape architecture, interior design, engineering, sustainability and other related fields, and participation is open to students enrolled in, or graduates of, higher education institutions in the UAE. [ 1 , 2 ]

Aletihad reported that the competition offers prizes with a total value of Dh320,000 and that registration and participation are free of charge, with the aim of encouraging talent and attracting creative ideas and visions. Neither document, as available, states registration or submission deadlines, and the passages describing participation are truncated in both texts. [ 1 , 2 ]

Why it matters

The competition is presented by UAEU's College of Engineering as a way to link academic work to community and environmental questions in the Al Ain Region. Because it is open to students and professionals across the UAE, it may feed local debate on desert-appropriate architecture and urban design. The documents give no further basis for broader significance.
