South Korea beat Japan 1-0 in the men's football final of the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on 3 October at Toyota Stadium in Aichi prefecture, Japan, securing a fourth consecutive gold medal in the event, Yonhap and Hankook Ilbo reported. Eom Ji-sung (Swansea City) scored the winning goal, from a cross by Yang Min-hyuk. [ 1 , 2 ]
After the match, coach Lee Min-sung told a news conference that all his players were the team's biggest contributors, but that if he had to choose one he would pick Yang Hyun-jun. Yang, a winger at Celtic, was one of the three wildcard players aged 24 or over that each country is allowed at the tournament. [ 1 , 2 ]
Yang started South Korea's opening group game against Qatar — a 4-1 win — and assisted Kim Myung-jun's goal, but a hamstring problem meant he did not play again. Lee said Yang “was injured after one match and could not play, but he was hugely committed behind the scenes”, adding that this helped the players who took the field in the final. [ 1 , 2 ]
Yang said that after the team moved from Osaka, where it played the semi-final against China, to Toyota for the final, he asked to share a room with Yang Min-hyuk (Westerlo) and told the 20-year-old that an attacker should keep doing what he does consistently. Yang Min-hyuk then crossed for Eom's winning goal, which Yang Hyun-jun said he found “truly moving”. [ 1 , 2 ]
Yang described his wider role as holding the squad together, saying the team had felt somewhat separate as overseas-based players joined late, and that he tried to bring it together by talking about football and everyday life. He also said he tried to buy nearly all the coffee, and named Lee Young-jun, Kim Jun-hong and Lee Seung-won as players who had completed military service but contributed as much as anyone. [ 1 ]
Yang said the gold medal and the military service benefit that comes with it had resolved a major variable in his career, allowing him to aim higher. He added that South Korea has many good young players and that more of them are likely to move abroad. [ 1 ]
Lee said he was sorry that his players, competing under difficult conditions, had received little attention because of him, and that the team had taken criticism over its performances but the result was what mattered most at this tournament. “I think we achieved our objective in our own way,” he said. [ 2 ]
Why it matters
The gold extends South Korea's run of Asian Games men's football titles to four and, as Yonhap reported, carries military service benefits for the players — Yang Hyun-jun said it removes a major variable for his career abroad. It also puts the spotlight on how a squad built around late-arriving overseas players was held together, and on the coach's own account of criticism over the team's performances.
