Russia’s Defense Ministry said on October 4 that its forces struck transport infrastructure in Ukraine used in the interests of the Ukrainian military, as well as military warehouses and drone storage sites. TASS reported the strikes in a headline, and the business outlets Interfax and Vedomosti carried the ministry’s statement at greater length. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

“Operational-tactical aviation, strike unmanned aerial vehicles, missile troops and artillery of the Russian Armed Forces groupings destroyed an air-target detection radar station and struck transport infrastructure facilities of Ukraine used in the interests of the Ukrainian armed forces, military property warehouses and storage sites for unmanned aerial vehicles,” the ministry said, according to Interfax. [ 2 ]

The ministry also said temporary deployment points of Ukrainian forces were hit in 147 districts. Vedomosti reported that the same statement listed temporary deployment points of foreign mercenaries among the targets; Interfax’s account did not mention foreign mercenaries. [ 2 , 3 ]

Vedomosti placed the statement in the context of earlier strikes. It said that on October 3 the ministry reported a Russian drone strike on a cargo ship in the port of Odesa that was used in the interests of the Ukrainian military, and that overnight into October 3 Russian forces struck Ukrainian infrastructure and a sea vessel, damaging Kyiv’s Northern road bridge over the Dnieper and the Gostomel logistics centre in the Kyiv region. According to the ministry, the bridge was used by Ukrainian forces to move troops and logistics supplies. [ 3 ]

The same outlet reported that on October 2 Russian forces took control of the village of Grachevka and the settlement of Serdobino in the Kharkiv region and the village of Malaya Rybitsa in the Sumy region, with units of the “North” group taking the settlements. [ 3 ]

The documents do not state which locations in Ukraine were hit in the past 24 hours, what damage was caused or whether there were casualties, and they contain no Ukrainian or other response to the ministry’s account. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Why it matters

The reports are the Russian military’s own account of a day of strikes, issued through state and business outlets with no independent verification in the documents. They place the strikes inside a continuing campaign against Ukrainian transport and logistics targets, while the ministry’s account of previous days’ strikes on a Kyiv bridge, the Odesa port and settlements in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions indicates the fighting is affecting transport and border areas.
