The ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO) raised its forecast for South Korea's 2026 economic growth to 3.3%, 0.2 percentage points above its July figure of 3.1%, in a revised Regional Economic Outlook issued on Oct. 5. AMRO also lifted its 2027 growth forecast for Korea to 2.7% from 2.2%, an increase of 0.5 percentage points. [ 1 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 12 ]
The 2026 inflation forecast for Korea was raised to 2.7% from 2.6%, while the 2027 figure was lowered to 2.3% from 2.4%. AMRO said core inflation is relatively stable but that global energy and food price rises are reflected with a lag. Yonhap reported that the government described the growth revision as a second consecutive upgrade following July. [ 1 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 12 ]
For the wider ASEAN+3 region, AMRO forecast growth of 4.1% in both 2026 and 2027, saying firm AI-related export and investment demand would partly offset weaker domestic demand caused by higher energy prices. Business outlets linked the Korea upgrade to a semiconductor-led export boom; Dong-A Ilbo said exports had passed $800 billion for the year through last month, putting $1 trillion within reach. [ 1 , 5 , 7 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]
AMRO said risks to the regional outlook are tilted to the downside. It cited a possible slowdown in AI-related demand, higher energy, transport and production costs from the Middle East conflict, food price increases from El Niño weather, a correction in stock markets led by technology shares, rising bond yields, sudden changes in expectations for US monetary policy and higher trade costs from further protectionist measures. It named geoeconomic fragmentation, population ageing and climate change as longer-term structural risks. [ 1 , 5 , 7 , 12 ]
Other forecasters also put Korea's 2026 growth in the low-to-mid 3% range: the OECD at 3.7%, the ADB at 3.2%, the Bank of Korea at 3.3%, the KDI at 3.2% and the finance ministry at 3.0%. Asia Economy said the revision contained no separate country comments. Its report also described the revision in terms of the ADB and put the April forecast at 1.1%, while other outlets attributed the 3.3% figure to AMRO and said the April forecast was 1.9%. [ 1 , 7 , 10 , 11 , 12 ]
Why it matters
The revision adds to a run of upgrades from domestic and international institutions that now put Korea's 2026 growth in the low-to-mid 3% range, a shift Korean outlets link to semiconductor and AI-related export demand. AMRO's warning that AI demand could slow, alongside the Middle East conflict and further protectionism, marks the main risk it sees to that outlook.
