A resident of the Nizhny Novgorod region has been charged in the killings of three women whose dismembered bodies were found in a vehicle, the regional Investigative Committee's press service said, according to RBC. Meduza reported that the suspect had earlier deserted from a military unit. [ 2 , 3 ]

Citing the regional Investigative Committee, Meduza reported that on 3 October in the settlement of Neklyudovo the man struck his partner several times on the head with a crowbar during a conflict and she died. He then travelled to Nizhny Novgorod and told the dead woman's mother and daughter what had happened; because they planned to go to the police, he killed them as well, the same account said. [ 3 ]

The report said the man then dismembered the bodies, placed the remains in bags and rented a Gazelle to take them to a forest. On the road, traffic police stopped the vehicle for a check. Interior Ministry representative Irina Volk said, as quoted by Meduza: “In the body were found suitcases, backpacks, packages and bags. The driver explained that these were the personal belongings of his passenger. He became nervous, and then suddenly ran from the police officers, but was detained.” [ 3 ]

According to the Telegram channel 112, cited by Meduza, the three victims were aged 47, 77 and 18. Meduza reported that the Investigative Committee and the Interior Ministry did not specify under what circumstances the man deserted or whether he had taken part in combat in Ukraine. [ 3 ]

The outlets differed on the initial account: RIA Novosti reported that the bodies of two women had been found in a truck in Nizhny Novgorod, while RBC reported that three dismembered women were found in a car in the Nizhny Novgorod region. [ 1 , 2 ]

Why it matters

The case concerns a criminal investigation in one Russian region and, as reported by Meduza, a suspect who had left his military unit. The documents say the Investigative Committee and the Interior Ministry did not specify the circumstances of the desertion or any combat service, so the wider implications are not established by the reporting.
