Shell falls near Moldova-Ukraine border crossing, officer lightly wounded
In short
A shell fell next to Moldova’s Palanca border crossing with Ukraine on the morning of 5 October, ricocheting off the ground into a bus and the border control cabin and lightly wounding a border police officer. The crossing was suspended and traffic redirected to Tudora, and Moldova’s border police linked the incident to Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure, while Russia’s ambassador has called such accusations unsubstantiated. TASS later reported the crossing had reopened and the officer’s health was not in danger.

A shell fell near the Palanca border crossing on Moldova’s border with Ukraine on the morning of 5 October, lightly wounding an officer of Moldova’s border police, according to the border police and to Russian and Moldovan outlets. The Palanca–Maiaky–Udobne crossing was suspended and later resumed work. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 7 ]
Moldova’s border police said the shell fell at 09:38 next to the crossing on Moldovan territory and, after hitting the ground, ricocheted into a parked bus and the border control cabin. The bus was damaged and a police officer received a light wound, the police said, according to Kommersant. Meduza, citing the Moldovan broadcaster TV8, reported the same sequence and said traffic in the area was halted and vehicles heading for the border were redirected to the Tudora crossing. [ 2 , 3 , 5 ]
The border police said the incident was “related to Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure”, and the Moldovan side placed responsibility on Russia, Kommersant reported. Vedomosti reported that the border service said the incident allegedly occurred “as a result of Russia’s attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure”. Meduza said Moldovan media noted the shell fell amid intensified Russian strikes on Ukraine’s border territory but did not specify who the munition belonged to. [ 2 , 3 , 5 ]
The incident followed a series of Moldovan protests over airspace violations. Vedomosti reported that on 3 October Moldova’s foreign ministry handed ambassador Oleg Ozerov a protest note over drones and missiles of unspecified origin violating the republic’s airspace, the second summons in a week, and that on 1 October it handed him a note after three drones entered the airspace, two of which fell and exploded on Moldovan territory. Kommersant reported that Ozerov earlier called accusations against Russia unsubstantiated, said Moldova was not a target, and later said Moscow was ready for a joint investigation while claiming Chisinau was avoiding cooperation. Kommersant also noted that in August 2023 three crossings on the Moldova-Ukraine border were temporarily closed over the risk of air attack, and that on 1 October 2026 Moldova closed its airspace over central and northern districts because of a drone. [ 3 , 5 ]
TASS reported at 17:55 that the crossing had resumed work after the shell incident and that the injured border guard’s health was not in danger. [ 7 ]
Why it matters
The incident adds to a run of Moldovan complaints about drones and missiles entering its airspace and to the diplomatic exchanges between Chisinau and Moscow. The temporary closure of a Moldova-Ukraine border crossing disrupted traffic on that route. The documents give no indication of consequences beyond these exchanges and the crossing’s reopening.
