Russia says air defense downed 39 more drones approaching Moscow
Version 2: A second day of interceptions was reported near Moscow, with official outlets saying air defense downed nine, then ten and then 39 more drones approaching the capital on October 6, while the October 5 figures and airport restrictions carried over from the previous report.
In short
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said Russian air defense destroyed nine drones flying toward the capital on October 5, with emergency services working where debris fell. On October 6, RIA Novosti reported that air defense downed nine more drones, then ten more, and at 09:21 reported 39 further drones; TASS carried the same 39-drone figure and said emergency services were at the debris site. Russian air defense forces destroyed nine drones that were flying toward Moscow, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on October 5. Sobyanin said specialists from emergency services were working at the site where the debris fell. RIA Novosti, Interfax, Kommersant, RBC and Vedomosti all reported the statement. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]
Interfax said Sobyanin announced the downing in his channel in the Max messenger. Kommersant and Vedomosti described the nine drones as Ukrainian; Interfax, RBC and RIA Novosti did not state their origin. Kommersant said no other details were being given. [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]
Vedomosti reported that 14 drones were destroyed near Moscow over the previous day, with Sobyanin informing about the last five of them at 20:03 Moscow time. Overnight, Vedomosti said, Rosaviatsia reported that Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports received and dispatched flights in coordination with the relevant authorities because of temporary restrictions on the use of airspace around the airports. The airports are now operating normally, Vedomosti said. Over the whole of October 4, it reported, air defense forces on duty neutralized 280 Ukrainian drones over the Kursk, Belgorod, Smolensk, Bryansk, Kaluga, Tula, Oryol and Rostov regions, the Moscow region, Krasnodar Krai and Crimea, as well as over the waters of the Black and Azov seas. [ 5 ]
The following day, October 6, RIA Novosti reported in a headline that air defense forces destroyed nine more drones flying toward Moscow, then ten more, and at 09:21 reported 39 more. TASS carried the same figure of 39 additional drones at the same time, adding that emergency services were working at the site where debris fell. Neither outlet stated the drones' origin for the October 6 reports, and no totals for the day were given. [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]
The documents give no information on casualties or damage on the ground after any of the reported interceptions. [ 3 , 9 ]
Why it matters
The reports describe repeated interception of drones approaching the Russian capital across two days, an event type that has previously affected Moscow-area civil aviation: Vedomosti said Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports operated under temporary overnight airspace restrictions before returning to normal. Official outlets carry the figures without detail on consequences on the ground, which the documents leave unstated.

- The origin of the drones reported on October 6. The RIA Novosti and TASS reports give no origin for the drones downed on October 6, unlike Kommersant and Vedomosti for the October 5 case.
- When exactly each group of drones was destroyed. The documents give only publication times, not the times of the interceptions.
- Whether the 39 drones reported at 09:21 on October 6 are additional to the nine and ten reported earlier that day. RIA Novosti and TASS use the wording “39 more,” indicating additional drones, but the documents do not state a running total for the day.
