Russia's Defence Ministry said it is working closely with military investigative bodies and providing maximum assistance to the criminal case against Igor Vasilyev, general director of the ministry's Central Patriot Park, who was detained on suspicion of taking a bribe. The ministry made the statement in response to a request from RBC, and the wording was carried by RBC, Vedomosti and the state agency TASS. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

TASS reported the ministry's position that “intolerance of any corrupt practices by officials of governing bodies and organizations of the military department is an unconditional priority of the Defence Ministry's activity.” Vedomosti carried the same statement. [ 2 , 3 ]

Vedomosti reported that Patriot Park opened in 2015 in Kubinka, outside Moscow, at the initiative of then defence minister Sergei Shoigu, and houses equipment of all branches of the armed forces, including experimental and one-off items, along with themed exhibitions, an obstacle course and events including forums. [ 3 ]

According to Vedomosti, Vasilyev represented the Komi Republic in the Federation Council from 2004 to 2010, served as an auditor of the Accounts Chamber from 2010 to 2013, headed Rosreestr from 2013 to 2016 and was governor of the Kirov region from 2016 to 2022, acting in that post until September 2017, before resigning of his own accord. TASS reported that he became director of Patriot Park in January 2026. [ 3 ]

The documents also place the case against Vasilyev alongside an earlier corruption case at the same site. Vedomosti reported that the park's former curator, ex-deputy defence minister and army general Pavel Popov, was accused of embezzlement during construction of park facilities, and that a court sentenced him on 10 April to 19 years in a strict-regime colony. The documents do not say whether the two cases are connected. [ 3 ]

The documents give no details of the alleged bribe, do not name the investigative body handling the case and do not say where Vasilyev is being held or whether he has responded to the allegation. [ 1 , 3 ]

Why it matters

The case touches an institution run directly by the Defence Ministry, and the ministry's public pledge of cooperation signals it is treating the detention as a reputational matter. Vedomosti notes that Patriot Park's previous curator, former deputy defence minister Pavel Popov, was already convicted over embezzlement at the park, making this the second corruption case linked to the same project.
