MakinaRocks installs on-device AI assistant on Navy frigate Pohang
Version 2: Chosun Ilbo has now also reported the Pohang deployment, corroborating the core details, but no new facts about the system or its trial have emerged.
In short
MakinaRocks said it has installed an “equipment operation AI assistant” on the Pohang frigate of the Navy’s First Fleet Command and begun trial operation. The system runs on the company’s own Runway AI operating system as a lightweight on-device setup suited to the ship’s closed network, trained on gunnery technical manuals and maintenance data. ZDNet Korea reported the Navy will review expanding the application to other ships and defense fields.

MakinaRocks said on Oct. 6 that it has installed an “equipment operation AI assistant” on the Pohang frigate of the Navy’s First Fleet Command and entered trial operation. Yonhap, ZDNet Korea and Chosun Ilbo all reported the installation. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
The assistant is built on the company’s own AI operating system, Runway, together with an AI agent framework, and was trained on gunnery technical manuals and maintenance data so that sailors can quickly check needed information and use related manuals and guidelines while operating equipment. Because the ship blocks external network connections, it was built as a lightweight on-device AI environment, the company said. Yonhap said the system is intended to narrow skill gaps among personnel and to support equipment operation quickly. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
ZDNet Korea reported that the project was carried out as part of the Defense Innovation Company 100 technology development support program run by the Korea Research Institute for Defense Technology Planning and Advancement. The same outlet reported that the assistant was installed on the frigate, that normal operation was confirmed, and that a demonstration was held for senior officers including the First Fleet commander. Yonhap carried the deployment as one item in a daily technology roundup and gave no details of the program or of the demonstration; Chosun Ilbo reported the installation and the Runway-based design in a short summary without further detail. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
MakinaRocks CEO Yoon Sung-ho said the Pohang demonstration was meaningful in that it confirmed AI technology can substantively support weapons-system operation even in a ship’s closed-network and on-device environment. He said the company would reflect field feedback to improve convenience in military equipment operation and develop physical AI technology supporting the modernization of defense capabilities. [ 2 ]
According to ZDNet Korea, MakinaRocks will continue trial operation aboard the ship and refine the system using feedback from the field. The report said the Navy will review expanding the scope of application to various ships and defense fields based on the trial results, and that MakinaRocks intends to widen the use of its AI technology to various weapons systems and equipment across the army, navy and air force. [ 2 ]
Why it matters
The deployment is a test of whether AI can operate inside a military platform that has no external network connection, something the company says the Pohang installation demonstrated. ZDNet Korea reported the Navy will review widening the system to various ships and defense areas, and that MakinaRocks aims to extend the technology to more weapons and equipment across the armed services. The documents give no figures on cost, evaluation data or expected operational gains.
