Musk confirms Terafab-TSMC talks; Intel shares fall, TSMC hits record
Коротко
Elon Musk confirmed on X that his chip project Terafab and Taiwan's TSMC are holding talks, saying it is “just discussions” but that something may come of it. TSMC has not issued an official position. After the reports, Intel shares fell while TSMC closed at a record $485.80, as investors weighed whether Intel keeps its previously reported role as Terafab's sole participant.

Elon Musk has confirmed that his semiconductor project Terafab and Taiwan's TSMC are in talks. In a post on X, Musk said the discussions were preliminary — “just discussions, but something may come of it” — according to AI Times and Yonhap. TSMC has not issued an official position, AI Times reported. [ 1 , 3 ]
The reports, first attributed by AI Times to semiconductor industry source Culpium, say TSMC is considering building and operating a production facility with Terafab that would exclusively supply chips to Musk-led companies such as Tesla and SpaceX. AI Times described Terafab's purpose as securing custom chips for Tesla's vehicles and autonomous driving systems, SpaceX's space and satellite operations, and xAI's AI data centers. Yonhap described Terafab as Musk's AI semiconductor base and reported a target of producing 1 terawatt of chips per year. [ 1 , 3 ]
The reports moved the market. Yonhap, citing MarketWatch, reported that Intel shares fell 2.65 while TSMC shares rose 2.7% to a record close of $485.80 per share, and that Intel fell a further 2.6% intraday. Korea Economic Daily also reported a decline in Intel's share price in a headline. According to Yonhap, Intel had until now been known as the sole participant in Terafab and was regarded as the project's biggest beneficiary, with its shares rising in April on that participation. [ 2 , 3 ]
Analysts quoted by Yonhap offered differing readings. Gil Luria of D.A. Davidson said that if Intel does not take part, or is merely one of several fab technology providers, “investors could revalue Intel.” Yonhap also reported analysis suggesting Musk may have mentioned TSMC to negotiate unit prices with Intel. Luke Lavari, CEO of Equity Armor Investments, pointed to US government investment in Intel and said it is hard to see Intel being substantially replaced. [ 3 ]
What any cooperation would look like is not known. AI Times reported that the specific production scale, process technology and investment method have not been disclosed, and that Terafab does not appear aimed at competing with TSMC, Samsung's foundry business or Intel Foundry as an independent foundry — its priority is a stable supply of custom chips for Tesla, SpaceX and xAI. Whether Intel remains involved is not established by the documents. [ 1 , 3 ]
Почему это важно
Terafab is described in the documents as Musk's AI semiconductor base, meant to secure custom chips for Tesla, SpaceX and xAI, so a TSMC role would change who supplies a large share of those chips. Intel, previously reported as the project's sole participant and biggest beneficiary, saw its shares fall as investors reassessed that position. The documents say the talks are at a discussion stage and that TSMC has given no official position, so nothing is settled.

Пока неясно
- Whether TSMC will actually join Terafab, and in what role, remains open. Musk described the talks as discussions only and TSMC has not issued an official position, so no agreement is reported.
- The production scale, process technology and investment structure of any Terafab-TSMC facility are not known. AI Times states explicitly that these details are unknown.
- Whether Intel remains a participant in Terafab is not established by the documents. Intel's previously reported sole participation is described as what was “known” before Musk's TSMC comments; no outlet confirms a change.
- Analysts' suggestions that Musk raised TSMC to negotiate prices with Intel, or that Intel could be revalued or substantially replaced, are opinions rather than confirmed facts. Yonhap attributes these to named analysts and describes one line as analysis.
