Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council chairman Rashad al-Alimi announced on October 5 the launch of the “Yemen Dawn” operation, according to the Yemen government-controlled Saba news agency. The operation is aimed at restoring the work of state institutions, liberating Sanaa and ending what the government describes as the Houthi rebellion, the report said. [ 1 ]
Saudi-led coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki said on social media that the coalition sent 100 fighter jets in the early hours of October 5 and destroyed 324 high-value targets. He did not say which countries took part in the day's operation, China News Service reported. Reuters, citing Yemeni government sources, said government forces supported by the large-scale Saudi airstrikes reached the outskirts of Mocha on the Red Sea coast on the evening of October 5, with Houthi fighters retreating toward the mountains. [ 1 ]
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said in a statement on October 5 that the group attacked several important targets inside Saudi Arabia, including Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport, a refinery in the Red Sea city of Rabigh, Abha International Airport, King Khalid Air Base and the Aqifah military camp in southwestern Asir province. He described the attacks as a response to 60 Saudi airstrikes and missile strikes on Yemen in the previous 24 hours. Saree also warned all international airlines using Saudi airspace to stop flying immediately, saying that apart from Mecca and Medina, Saudi airspace had become an “operation zone”. [ 1 ]
On October 6, Saree said the Houthis had carried out dozens of attacks in Lahij province in southern Yemen on what he called gathering sites of Saudi-backed armed personnel, causing more than 200 casualties among them, according to CLS and Yicai. No independent confirmation of the figure appears in the documents. [ 2 , 3 ]
The escalation prompted Saudi allies to act. Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey held an emergency meeting in Riyadh on October 5 of the strategic political and defense committee of the Mecca Defense Alliance, and agreed to swiftly deploy military forces to Saudi Arabia under the Mecca Common Defense Agreement, the Saudi Press Agency reported. That agreement, signed in August, states that an armed attack on any of the three countries is treated as an attack on all three. [ 1 ]
The International Organization for Migration said on October 5 that intense fighting in Yemen had displaced more than 184,000 people between August 1 and October 4, most of them since early September. Its director general, Pope, called on the international community to take more urgent measures to ensure all those affected can receive humanitarian aid. [ 1 ]
Почему это важно
The escalation draws in Saudi Arabia's allies under the Mecca Common Defense Agreement, widening a conflict that already borders the Red Sea shipping route, which the Houthi warning to airlines puts in question. The displacement figures reported by the International Organization for Migration indicate the humanitarian impact is growing. Much of the reporting rests on statements by the warring sides, so the scale of damage and casualties remains difficult to verify.
