South Korea beat Uzbekistan 2-0 at Yongin Mir Stadium on 6 October in the last match of the national team's September–October international window, Newsis and other Korean outlets reported. In the same game, captain Son Heung-min passed former coach Cha Bum-kun to stand alone as the leading scorer in South Korea men's A matches. [ 2 , 3 , 5 , 7 , 10 ]

After the match, reports circulated that Kim Min-jae, Hwang Hee-chan and Hwang In-beom — all born in 1996 — were considering retiring from the national team, with talk that the three looked unhappy in a photograph taken on the pitch. Hwang In-beom denied it in the mixed zone. “I did not shed tears when we took the photo. That was during an interview after the previous match,” he said, according to Newsis. The Korea Football Association called the reports groundless. [ 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 11 ]

Hwang said the tears came from regret over the team's recent results. “We did not get the result we wanted at the last World Cup and showed a poor side. I felt great regret and sorry about that,” he said. He also addressed his earlier remarks about interim coach Roberto Moreno: he said his use of the word “interim” did not mean the players would not give their best because the coach was leaving, but that he thought the situation was wrong ahead of the Asian Cup, when it was unclear whether the coach would stay. He apologised to the coaching staff and team-mates for saying things he could have kept to himself. [ 2 , 3 , 7 ]

The win closed an uneven window for the side under Moreno. South Korea beat Ecuador 3-0 on 24 September, lost 1-4 to Uruguay on 28 September and drew 0-0 with Venezuela on 2 October before beating Uzbekistan, giving the interim coach a record of two wins, one draw and one loss. Newsis reported that the November matches, described as the last of Moreno's current tenure, will be played away. [ 2 , 3 , 7 , 8 ]

Later reports added detail. Kyunghyang Shinmun said a late-night meeting was held about an hour after the Uzbekistan match and described the three players' “considerable grievances” as effectively confirmed, and it reported doubts over captain Son Heung-min's leadership and talk of friction between him and some players. It quoted Hwang as saying he is “always preparing for retirement” and said the football association stated there had been no retirement-related discussion. Korea Economic Daily's headline referred to complaints about Son's leadership. [ 8 , 9 , 10 ]

The accounts do not agree on everything: the football association described the retirement talk as groundless, while Kyunghyang reported the players' grievances as effectively confirmed. The documents do not name the origin of the retirement reports, and only Hwang In-beom is reported to have spoken to reporters. [ 3 , 6 , 8 , 9 ]

Почему это важно

The reports concerned three senior members of the national team and prompted the Korea Football Association to issue a public denial, making the squad's stability a talking point around the team's results. Korean outlets also tied the episode to the position of interim coach Roberto Moreno and to questions about captain Son Heung-min's leadership, both of which the documents leave open. The coverage is domestic and tied to the national team's recent run of results.
