Yeongdeok County in North Gyeongsang Province said four of its villages have applied to host a new correctional facility under a contest run by the Ministry of Justice, the county announced on Oct 6. Yonhap reported that the county received applications from its towns and townships until Oct 1, with two villages in Yeongdeok-eup and two in Yeonghae-myeon submitting documents. The county plans to review the applicants for site suitability, accessibility and infrastructure, narrow the list to two or three, and submit them to the Ministry of Justice by Oct 12, according to Yonhap. The ministry's notice allows each local government to propose up to three sites, Yonhap reported. It will accept attraction proposals from local governments nationwide until Nov 4, evaluate them and select the candidate sites in December, with the aim of building four new correctional facilities. If Yeongdeok is selected, the county is considering a plan to allocate additional annual project costs to the relevant town or township as compensation for hosting the facility, according to Yonhap. A county official said, “We will proceed carefully in line with the Ministry of Justice's contest schedule, comprehensively reviewing the county's own selection committee, regional conditions and balanced development of the north and south.” [ 2 ]
