Police in St Petersburg have detained two suspects in the robbery of a woman who was carrying money she had collected from a victim of telephone fraud to the scammers, the press service of the city’s interior ministry headquarters said, according to Interfax. According to preliminary data, on 3 October near a building on Grazhdansky Prospekt one of those detained snatched from the woman a bag containing money she had earlier received from the fraud victim. The account of the money’s origin came from a separate report to police by a 76-year-old city resident, who said unknown people had persuaded her by telephone to “declare” her savings and that she had handed over more than 3.1 million rubles to a female courier. RBC and TASS, in their reports on the same case, put the sum at about 3 million rubles. [ 1 , 3 , 4 ]

Criminal cases have been opened under articles covering fraud and robbery, Interfax reported. The courier was placed under a measure of procedural compulsion in the form of an obligation to appear; the documents do not state whether she faces charges. [ 1 ]

Почему это важно

The case illustrates how money collected from telephone-scam victims can itself become a target for other criminals, with police opening proceedings for both fraud and robbery. The documents do not indicate any wider policy response or further consequences beyond the ongoing investigation.
