The Intercept: US may never restore Middle East military presence
Коротко
The Intercept, citing US administration officials, reports that the US may never restore its military presence in the Middle East after Iranian strikes damaged more than 15 bases, including the Fifth Fleet hub in Bahrain. Official figures cited by Russian outlets put US losses at 19 killed and about 900 wounded, while The Intercept says the real toll may be higher. Damage to bases, depleted Patriot and THAAD interceptor stocks and longer Navy supply routes are said to limit US operations in the region.

Three Russian outlets reported on an article by The Intercept saying the United States may never restore its military presence in the Middle East. The publication, cited by TASS, Vedomosti and Kommersant, attributed the assessment to sources among US administration officials; one official said the configuration of US bases in the region “may already never be restored.” The reports link the situation to damage caused by Iranian strikes on US facilities. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
According to Vedomosti and Kommersant, Iran attacked more than 15 US bases in the Middle East. Hundreds of buildings and structures were damaged or destroyed at US facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman and Jordan. Vedomosti said the US Navy site in Manama, Bahrain — a key US logistics hub — was especially hard hit, and that restoring Fifth Fleet headquarters, barracks and communications infrastructure could cost more than $400 million, an estimate one source said might be too low. Kommersant said Fifth Fleet infrastructure in Bahrain and allied bases in Cyprus and Diego Garcia were heavily damaged. [ 2 , 3 ]
Operationally, Vedomosti reported that because of the damage to the Fifth Fleet base and threats to other Navy ports, the US has to supply its carrier group from remote points including Diego Garcia, stretching supply cycles to 14–18 days. Kommersant reported that the risk of Iranian drone attacks led the US to withdraw 12 long-range B-1 bombers from the UK, and that combat has depleted US stocks of Patriot and THAAD interceptors. Citing an estimate dated 16 September 2026, Kommersant said the US had used between half and two-thirds of its interceptor missiles and would need at least five years to replenish them; a 25 April 2026 estimate put the cost of restoring infrastructure at billions of dollars. Kommersant added that the bases have become too dangerous to operate in their pre-war mode. [ 2 , 3 ]
Official figures cited by both Vedomosti and Kommersant say 19 US service members have been killed and about 900 wounded since the conflict began. The Intercept says the real losses may be higher, according to Vedomosti. Kommersant noted that CBS News published photographs of damage to US bases in the Middle East in September. [ 2 , 3 ]
Vedomosti also cited a 6 October Bloomberg report saying Iran had increased the pace of attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz in recent days, while oil supplies through the corridor had approached pre-war levels. It reported that US President Donald Trump said he was ready to sacrifice Los Angeles or San Diego in the war with Iran, and that Iran could “destroy the city,” without providing evidence that the country has weapons of mass destruction or long-range weapons. TASS carried only a short summary of The Intercept's report, saying it was linked to serious damage from Iranian strikes on US bases. [ 1 , 2 ]
Почему это важно
The reports describe damage that would restrict US operations across the Middle East, with bases unusable in their pre-war mode and interceptor stocks that Kommersant says would take at least five years to replenish. Vedomosti's citation of a Bloomberg report on attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz and oil flows near pre-war levels ties the military situation to a corridor that matters for global oil supply. The central claims rest on one US outlet's anonymous sources and are not independently confirmed in the documents.
