Trading in precious metals on the Moscow Exchange exceeded 557 bln rubles in September in the main trading mode, twice the result for the same month a year earlier, according to data on the exchange’s website cited by Vedomosti and Kommersant. Vedomosti and Kommersant reported that 45.9 tonnes of gold were traded in September, 61% more than a year earlier, for 542.2 bln rubles — almost double last September’s figure in money terms. Silver turnover was 80.4 tonnes worth 13.9 bln rubles, platinum 121 kg worth 584 mln rubles and palladium 142 kg worth 497 mln rubles. Individual investors made up 5.6% of those trading gold in September, 24.2% of those trading silver, 33.2% of those trading palladium and 35.1% of those trading platinum, the two business outlets reported. Kommersant, in background on how the market works, said exchange gold trading combines book-entry accounting with the option for a buyer to convert gold from an exchange account into bars, and that spot contracts, unlike futures, have no execution deadline, so a position does not have to be closed or rolled over by a set date. It added that in 2025 participants in precious metals trading included banks and brokers as well as management companies, producers, consumers and about 150,000 private investors. [ 3 ]
