Trump says Fort Hood gunman's firing-squad execution will not be livestreamed

US President Donald Trump said on 15 October (US time) that Nidal Malik Hasan, the gunman sentenced to death over the 2009 shooting at the Fort Hood military base in Texas, will be executed by firing squad as scheduled but that the execution will not be livestreamed. "He will be executed by firing squad as scheduled, but it will not be livestreamed," Trump wrote on Truth Social. Trump wrote that livestreaming the execution could have been a strong deterrent by letting the world see how the United States deals with "terrorists and scum" like Hasan, but that many good and well-meaning people would not want to watch him die through a livestream or any other visual means. He called Hasan a "traitor" and "evil and vicious", and said Hasan killed 13 people, including a pregnant soldier and her unborn child, and seriously injured 32 innocent people. The decision reverses a plan announced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said in a TV interview that the execution would be broadcast live. Newsis and Dong-A Ilbo said the interview was with the conservative outlet Real America's Voice on 7 October; Seoul Economic Daily dated it 8 October. Kyunghyang Shinmun reported that Trump said on 9 October he "fully supported" a livestream and the next day said he would make the final decision. Vice President JD Vance said he would not watch, House Speaker Mike Johnson warned the video could be used for terrorist propaganda, Senator Thom Tillis called a livestream something a dictatorship would do, and Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski wrote on X that no execution needs to be livestreamed. The announcement came shortly after a Washington Post, ABC and Ipsos poll found 80% of respondents opposed livestreaming the execution, while 53% supported the execution itself and 42% opposed it. Seoul Economic Daily reported that the online survey of 2,545 US adults was conducted from 9 to 13 October and that Republicans opposed a livestream by 64% to 34%, and Democrats by 91%. Yonhap, CBS NoCut News and Maeil Business linked the reversal to the 3 November midterm elections, less than three weeks away. [ 8 , 10 , 11 , 15 ]
Hasan, a former Army major, was sentenced to death for the shooting, which killed 13 soldiers and civilians and wounded 32. Newsis and Dong-A Ilbo reported that the Pentagon said on 5 October it had recommended a firing-squad execution and Trump had approved it, the first execution by the US military since 1961. They said it is scheduled for 1 p.m. Central time on 3 December at Fort Hood. [ 5 , 9 ]
Trump has also spoken recently about the death penalty in other cases. Chosun Ilbo reported that at a White House lunch on 15 October with police officers, firefighters and border patrol agents, he said he was reintroducing the death penalty for those who kill police or law enforcement officers, and that at an Arizona rally the previous day he said whoever leaked information about military action against Iran should be shot.
