Hyosung Heavy Industries said on October 16 that it had completed a new plant in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, that will make only ultra-high-voltage circuit breakers for export. The plant covers about 18,996 square metres and will produce 420kV, 550kV and 800kV breakers. The company said this roughly doubles its production capacity for breakers of 420kV and above.

Hyosung Heavy Industries said it completed a new plant in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, on October 16 that is dedicated to producing ultra-high-voltage circuit breakers for export. The plant covers about 18,996 square metres and will make 420kV, 550kV and 800kV breakers. The company said its production capacity for breakers of 420kV and above has roughly doubled as a result. Chosun Ilbo reported that construction began in May last year and was completed in a little over a year. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 8 , 9 ]

The company has split production so that its existing breaker plant focuses on domestic models and the new plant on exports. It has also set up a "one-stop" system that handles parts production, assembly, testing and shipping in one place. Capacity for insulation material, a core component, has also roughly doubled; the company said it is the only Korean power equipment maker that produces insulation material in-house. Hyosung said the changes are meant to raise efficiency and improve its ability to meet delivery deadlines on large overseas orders. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 8 , 11 ]

The company linked the investment to demand for power infrastructure driven by AI, saying grid construction has not kept pace with Big Tech companies' data centre expansion. Yonhap also cited demand to replace ageing power grids. Outlets reported that Chairman Cho Hyun-joon has said that "the explosive growth of the AI industry will inevitably overload the global power grid" and that the company must become "a core partner" solving global customers' "AI bottleneck" through pre-emptive supply chain investment. Newsis reported that Cho personally led the project, and Chosun Ilbo said the company attributed the plant to his judgment. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 7 , 8 , 11 ]

Hyosung plans to expand breaker supply to major markets using the Changwon plant together with production sites in India and the US. In June it set up a joint venture with US infrastructure company Quanta, which the company said made it the first Korean power equipment maker with local ultra-high-voltage breaker capacity in the US. It has invested a total of $300 million (about 440 billion won) so far in its ultra-high-voltage transformer plant in Memphis, and expects to have among the largest transformer production capacity in the US once the ongoing expansion is finished. In Europe it plans to strengthen cooperation with local power technology institutions through its R&D centre in the Netherlands and to develop eco-friendly and customised products. [ 1 , 2 , 4 , 5 , 7 , 8 ]

Hyosung's breaker business began in 1978 with the development of a 170kV gas circuit breaker. In 2024 it became the first Korean power equipment company to pass 10 trillion won in cumulative breaker production. [ 1 , 2 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 11 ]

Maeil Business and Seoul Economic Daily reported that about 300 people attended the ceremony at the Changwon plant, including Hyosung Vice Chairman Lee Sang-woon (이상운), Democratic Party lawmaker Heo Seong-mu (허성무), People Power Party lawmaker Kim Jong-yang (김종양) and Kang Sang-hee (강상희), head of the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (한국전기연구원). ZDNet Korea and Yonhap described them as expected to attend. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 8 ]

Почему это важно

The company tied the investment to rising demand for power grid equipment as AI data centres expand, and said the extra capacity will help it meet delivery deadlines on large overseas orders. The plant is part of a wider push to supply more breakers abroad, alongside production in the US and India and an R&D centre in the Netherlands.
