One person was killed in the Belgorod region in Ukrainian attacks, according to Russian outlets, which gave differing accounts of how many people were wounded. Kommersant, RIA Novosti, TASS and Interfax all reported at least one death, while the regional operational headquarters, cited by Interfax, said four people were also injured. Regional governor Alexander Shuvalov reported two wounded, including a child, in an earlier 24-hour period. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 ]

Mr Shuvalov said in Telegram that a civilian was killed in Krasnoyaruzhsky district and that two people, including a child, were wounded in Shebekinsky and Yakovlevsky districts. “Both of the injured are hospitalized in a moderately serious condition,” the governor said. He added that air defences destroyed 130 Ukrainian drones over the region in the past 24 hours, that Ukrainian forces carried out 12 shellings with artillery, aviation and multiple launch rocket systems, and that they dropped explosive devices from drones six times. [ 1 ]

The regional operational headquarters gave a different account, Interfax reported. It said a man died at the scene after an FPV drone struck a truck in the settlement of Maslova Pristan in Shebekinsky district. In Grayvoron, a man was wounded when a drone attacked a car; he was being treated at the Grayvoron central district hospital and would then be transferred to a city hospital in Belgorod. In Shebekino, a drone struck the grounds of a private house, and a woman and two men were diagnosed with minor non-penetrating shrapnel wounds; after receiving help they were to be moved to a hospital in Belgorod. [ 4 ]

RIA Novosti reported that one resident was killed and another injured, and TASS reported that one person was killed, both without further detail. The documents do not make clear whether the differing totals cover the same attacks or different periods, or whether the governor and the regional operational headquarters were describing the same death. [ 2 , 3 ]

Why it matters

The reports indicate that drone and artillery attacks continue to cause civilian deaths and injuries in the Belgorod region, with the wounded taken to hospitals in Grayvoron and Belgorod. Because the governor’s account and the regional operational headquarters’ account differ on the number of wounded and the place where the fatality occurred, the full toll of the attacks remains unclear in the documents.

Still unclear

  • The number of people wounded, given as two including a child, as one, and as four. The governor’s figure covers the 24 hours before his October 3 statement, the regional operational headquarters’ figure is dated October 4, and RIA Novosti gives a different number without a period, so the documents do not make clear whether they describe the same attacks.
  • The location of the fatality, given by the governor as Krasnoyaruzhsky district and by the regional operational headquarters as Maslova Pristan in Shebekinsky district. The two accounts name different places and the documents do not say whether they refer to the same death or to separate incidents.
  • Whether the accounts from the governor and the regional operational headquarters cover the same period. The documents give no common timeframe, so the reported totals cannot be reconciled.
