Google to limit free Gemini users to Flash-Lite model from October 9
In short
Google is changing which AI models personal Gemini users can access, based on their Google AI subscription plan. From October 9, users without a paid plan will be limited to Flash-Lite; Flash requires AI Plus and the top Pro model requires AI Pro or AI Ultra. AI Plus subscribers will be told by email when the change applies to them.
Why it matters
The change puts the higher-capability Gemini models behind paid plans, so free personal users keep the app but lose model choice. Japanese outlets list the paid tiers at ¥725 to ¥14,500 a month, which sets the cost of regaining access to Flash and Pro. The documents give no indication of how many users are affected or whether the change applies outside Japan.
Key facts
- From October 9, Google will restrict the models available in the personal Gemini app according to the user's Google AI plan; users without a paid plan will have only Flash-Lite. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
- After the change there are three model tiers — Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro — and Google AI Plus subscribers can use Flash-Lite and Flash, while AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers can use all three. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
- Impress Watch listed the plans at ¥725 a month for Google AI Plus, ¥2,900 a month for AI Pro and from ¥14,500 a month for AI Ultra. [ 3 ]
- Each available model lets users pick an effort level of low, medium or high; a higher setting improves handling of complex tasks and detail but uses more of the usage allowance. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
- Deep Think, which runs parallel reasoning, is available on AI Pro and AI Ultra, according to ITmedia and Impress Watch. [ 1 , 3 ]
- Gemini's usage limits are calculated from prompt complexity, features used and chat length, reset every five hours, and also have a weekly cap; an unsubscribed account is the baseline, AI Plus gets twice that, AI Pro four times, and AI Ultra five or 20 times AI Pro depending on the contract, ITmedia and Impress Watch reported. [ 1 , 3 ]
- The model change covers personal accounts, and AI Plus users will be informed by email when it applies to them. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

- The timing of the change for Google AI Plus subscribers will be communicated by email. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
Still unclear
- When exactly the restriction takes effect for Google AI Plus subscribers. All three outlets say the date will be announced by email but none gives a date.
- Whether the change applies only in Japan or worldwide. The documents describe it as applying to personal accounts but do not state a region.
- The precise date the compute-based usage limit system began. ITmedia says May, while Impress Watch says May 17 and adds that it applied to users aged 18 and over; the two accounts differ in detail.
- The size of the AI Ultra usage allowance. ITmedia and Impress Watch say it is five or 20 times AI Pro depending on the contract, while Keitai Watch says only up to 20 times.
- The subscription prices of the Google AI plans. Only Impress Watch gives figures (AI Plus ¥725, AI Pro ¥2,900, AI Ultra from ¥14,500 a month).
