Google limits Gemini Pro access to $19.99 AI Pro plan and above
Version 2: Later coverage from Chosun Ilbo broadens the story, reporting that both OpenAI and Google are keeping subscription prices while cutting usage limits or available models, describing it as an effective increase in the cost of AI services.
In short
Google is changing its Gemini subscription tiers so the Pro model is offered only from the $19.99-a-month AI Pro plan upward, cutting off free users and $9.99 AI Plus subscribers. From Oct 9, free users are limited to the lighter Flash-Lite model, while Deep Think, previously exclusive to AI Ultra, is added to AI Pro. Google says usage limits are compute-based and partly refresh every five hours, and AI Times reported criticism from users on Reddit and X.

Google is adjusting which Gemini models each subscription tier can reach, according to notices on its customer support pages reported by Yonhap, AI Times and Chosun Ilbo. The Gemini Pro model will be offered from the AI Pro plan upward, priced at $19.99 a month, or 29,000 won in Korea, cutting off free users and subscribers to the $9.99-a-month (7,500 won) AI Plus plan. Google said free users' access to Gemini Pro and Flash would be restricted from Oct 9, leaving them with the lighter Flash-Lite model, according to Yonhap. Chosun Ilbo reported the same tier downgrade and said it takes effect this month. [ 1 , 2 , 4 ]
Deep Think, a feature that ran reasoning across multiple paths at once for AI Ultra subscribers, is added to AI Pro, Yonhap and AI Times reported. Users can also set a model's reasoning level to low, medium or high; Yonhap said higher levels can produce better answers but consume more of Google's usage allowance. AI Times reported that limits are calculated on compute rather than prompt counts and managed weekly, with part of the allowance refreshing every five hours, and that context windows differ by tier: 32,000 tokens for free users, 128,000 for AI Plus and up to 1 million for AI Pro and AI Ultra. [ 1 , 2 ]
AI Times reported that Google's notice did not disclose whether its newest top model, Gemini 4 Argon, will be included in any plan or how widely it will be applied. Yonhap said the model was released on Sept 30, about seven months after Gemini 3.1 Pro in February, and described the subscription change as effectively a price increase ahead of the top model's full release, intended to attract subscribers to higher tiers, with complaints expected. [ 1 , 2 ]
AI Times reported backlash in overseas communities including Reddit and X, where free and AI Plus users called the change a bait-and-switch that pushes them toward more expensive plans, and criticised a lack of clarity about what the $19.99 AI Pro plan provides. Google said it may limit prompts, conversations or some features for certain periods to maintain overall service quality, according to AI Times. [ 1 ]
Chosun Ilbo later framed the change as an effective increase in the cost of AI services, reporting that both OpenAI and Google are holding subscription prices while reducing usage limits or the models available on lower plans, a pattern the outlet called “AI usage fee inflation”. Yonhap reported that Google will notify subscribers individually by email about when the changes apply to them. [ 2 , 5 , 6 ]
Why it matters
The change decides which Gemini capabilities free users and cheaper subscribers can reach, and it comes as Google prepares to roll out a newer, computationally heavy top model, which Yonhap linked to a push toward higher-priced plans. Chosun Ilbo reported it as part of a wider pattern in which AI providers hold subscription prices while trimming what lower tiers get. The documents indicate the shift carries a reputational cost with lower-tier users.

Still unclear
- Whether the new top model Gemini 4 Argon will be included in any subscription plan, or how widely it will be applied. AI Times says Google's notice on the tier changes did not disclose this; Yonhap only reports the model's Sept 30 release.
- Exactly when the changed tiers take effect for each existing subscriber. Yonhap says Google will notify subscribers individually by email about the applicable timing, while AI Times dates the free-user restriction to the 9th.
- How much usage the $19.99 AI Pro plan actually provides. AI Times reports users have criticised the plan's usage terms as opaque; this is a complaint from one outlet rather than a confirmed figure.
- Whether the changes amount to a bait-and-switch or a price increase. The documents present this as interpretation or criticism rather than as a statement by Google.
- Whether Newsis's report matches the other outlets' accounts. The Newsis item's headline is about the Gemini plan change, but the article text in our feed concerns an unrelated DMZ mine incident, so only its headline could be read.
