Daniil Medvedev was disqualified from his China Open semifinal against Novak Djokovic in Beijing on Monday after a ball he hit went into the stands and struck a spectator sitting in the front row, according to Gulf News, The National and Emirates 24|7. The spectator was helped out of the arena by stadium staff, holding a hand over his left eye and appearing to be in pain. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Medvedev, described by Emirates 24|7 as the world No 5, was trailing 7-5, 5-3 when the incident happened. The National reported that Djokovic had hit a winner and the ball ricocheted off the back of the court, after which Medvedev swung a backhand in frustration; Emirates 24|7 said he hit the ball as it came off the wall. Gulf News said he hit the ball into the stands in apparent frustration. The National reported that after speaking with umpire Mohamed Lahyani and an ATP official, Medvedev walked to the net to shake hands with Djokovic and made no protest at the decision. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

“Terribly sorry to the spectator, first of all,” Medvedev said, according to The National. He said he was trying to get in touch with the spectator to apologise in person, adding that the ball was bouncing back and he tried to hit it anywhere so it would not leave the court. “When I saw the result, I mean, I felt horrible,” he was quoted as saying. Emirates 24|7 reported that the 30-year-old former US Open champion said he did not cause the incident intentionally. [ 2 , 3 ]

Djokovic said he was shocked. “I hope that person is not badly injured,” he said, adding that he also felt sorry for Medvedev because he knew how it felt to be disqualified in a big match, in a reference to his own default at the 2020 US Open for hitting a line judge with a ball. Gulf News noted the same parallel, recalling that Djokovic was removed from that tournament after accidentally striking a line judge in the throat. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Emirates 24|7 reported that Medvedev will lose his points and prize money from the tournament as a result of the default; the other two outlets did not mention the consequences of the disqualification. Gulf News and Emirates 24|7 reported that the result extended Djokovic's China Open record to 33 victories without a loss. [ 1 , 3 ]

Both semifinals ended prematurely. In the first, de Minaur led Hubert Hurkacz 6-4, 3-2 when the Pole retired. Gulf News said the nature of the injury was not immediately clear, while Emirates 24|7 said Hurkacz retired with an adductor injury and had struggled with movement during the match. Djokovic will face de Minaur in Tuesday's final. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

Почему это важно

The default ends Medvedev's run in Beijing and, according to Emirates 24|7, costs him his points and prize money from the tournament. Djokovic's win extends his unbeaten China Open record and sets up Tuesday's final against Alex de Minaur. The incident echoes Djokovic's own 2020 US Open disqualification for hitting a line judge, a comparison made in the coverage of two of the outlets.
