Gyeonggi Province said it will hold the 28th Gyeonggi Intangible Heritage Grand Festival from Oct. 16 to 18 at the Gapyeong Culture and Arts Center in Gapyeong. The province’s announcement was reported by the official-tier wire Yonhap and by the business outlets Asia Economy and Newsis. Asia Economy said the festival is held under the subtitle “Gyeonggi’s flair and excitement, connected together,” and that heritage holders and transmission instructors from across the province take part. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]

According to Asia Economy and Yonhap, traditional performing arts from different parts of the province will be staged indoors and outdoors, including Icheon Geobuk Nori, Gyeonggi Geommu, Gyeonggi Songseo Yulchang, Yangju Nongak and Toegye-won Sandae Nori. In the exhibition halls, the documents said, visitors can see works by artisans who have carried on traditional techniques. A “Memory Space” presents works, photographs, video and instruments of deceased heritage holders, while a “Future Exhibition” shows works by transmission instructors and how traditional techniques pass to the next generation. Asia Economy reported that the festival also includes a ceremony for the first “Gyeonggi Intangible Heritage Transmission and Memory Day,” with a tribute performance for transmission instructors and commendations for people who contributed to transmitting intangible heritage. The other documents did not mention this ceremony. [ 1 ]

This year’s edition adds an international exchange program introducing the traditional culture of Poland’s Lower Silesian province, according to Asia Economy and Yonhap. Both reported that the Legnica Song and Dance Ensemble will perform Polish folk dance and vocal works, and that the exhibition will show 43 pieces of Bolesławiec ceramics, described as a 700-year tradition, and 13 traditional glass craft works. Yonhap added that visitors can take part in a traditional paper-making experience run by the Duszniki-Zdrój paper museum. [ 1 , 3 ]

Yonhap said Gyeonggi Province has 72 designated intangible heritage items: 31 in the performing arts, including Icheon Geobuk Nori, and 41 in crafts, including Najeon Chilgi. Park Seong-hwan, head of the province’s cultural heritage division, said, according to Asia Economy and Yonhap, that the festival is a place to see various aspects of Gyeonggi’s intangible heritage in one setting, from stage performances to works born from artisans’ hands, and expressed hope that visitors would enjoy the special meeting with Polish intangible heritage while marking the province’s effort to remember earlier traditions and pass them to future generations. Why it matters

The festival is a provincial government event that presents Gyeonggi’s designated intangible heritage and, for the first time, a day marking its transmission and memory, according to the province. This year’s edition also adds a Poland exchange program, presented by the province and the outlets as a cultural link beyond the region. Its reach is mainly local, with the documents giving no indication of wider effects.
