Samsung Asset Management said on Oct 7 that it had published a pension investment guidebook titled “ETF 연금술사” (ETF Alchemist). The company said the book runs to six chapters and covers account selection, the tax benefits of contributing, managing and withdrawing pension money, practical questions and answers for both the accumulation and withdrawal phases, ETF basics, age-based portfolios and 22 KODEX ETFs. It is available as a free download from the company's official website without a membership sign-up. [ 2 , 3 ]
According to Asia Economy, the guidebook is organised around the message that investors build wealth by contributing small amounts consistently over a long period, and defines the basic materials of successful pension investing as the account and the ETF rather than individual stocks. It addresses questions the company says investors ask most often, including the order in which a dual-income couple should contribute, moving maturing ISA funds into a pension account, and ETFs that cannot be held in pension accounts. For the withdrawal phase it covers the tax difference between taking a severance payout as a lump sum and as a pension, and managing the 15 million won annual threshold for private pensions. [ 2 ]
The book proposes portfolios by age group: a growth-type mix centred on leading indices such as the US S&P 500 with a larger AI theme weighting for investors in their 20s; a balanced type combining growth with monthly dividends, asset allocation and commodities for those in their 30s and 40s; and a stable type holding up to 40% in monthly-dividend ETFs plus ultra-short-term bonds for those in their 50s and older. Kim Do-hyung, head of Samsung Asset Management's ETF consulting division, said that for pension investing lasting from a few years to several decades, “it is very important to first build a structure that reduces taxes and to invest long term in ETFs suited to the individual, in order to enjoy the compounding effects of time and accumulation.” He said the guidebook newly gathers the biggest concerns and solutions of investors who are moving past the accumulation phase into the withdrawal phase. Samsung Asset Management said a live web seminar marking the publication would be held at 6 p.m. on Oct 7 on the KODEX official YouTube channel, introducing the book's key content on account-specific tax strategies and portfolios and taking questions in real time. Yonhap carried a brief notice of the publication and the webinar. The Korea Economic Daily, reporting a day earlier, described the company as the asset manager that launched KODEX 200 in 2002 as Korea's first listed ETF and has kept the industry's No. 1 position for about 24 years. Why it matters
The guidebook and webinar are aimed at Korean retirement-account investors, a growing group as more savers move from accumulating pensions to drawing them down. It is a marketing and education effort by the country's largest ETF issuer, which the Korea Economic Daily says has held the top position in the domestic ETF market for about 24 years.

Still unclear
- Whether the guidebook described in the Korea Economic Daily headline as a beginner's “ETF primer” is the same publication as the “ETF 연금술사” guidebook described by the other outlets. The Korea Economic Daily headline refers to a beginner ETF primer without giving the title, while Asia Economy and Yonhap name “ETF 연금술사”; the documents do not say whether these are one book or two.
- The Korea Economic Daily's article text is partly made up of unrelated fragments, including a passage about JR Global REIT shareholders. The text could not be read as a coherent report on this event, so its details beyond the company's ETF market position were not used.
