One person was killed and six were injured in a drone attack on the Moscow region overnight, regional governor Andrei Vorobyov said. Reports from state and business outlets followed shortly after 07:00 local time. Vorobyov said 185 drones were destroyed and suppressed over the region in 16 municipalities. RBC, citing the governor's Telegram channel, described the attack as one carried out by Ukrainian drones, and Meduza described it as a massed Ukrainian drone strike on Moscow and the Moscow region. [ 1 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 7 , 8 ]

The person killed was a 20-year-old resident of the settlement of Radumlya in Solnechnogorsk district. Among the injured, a man with shrapnel wounds was taken to hospital in Pokrovskoye; two residents of Yadromino and Gorki were hospitalised in Istra, one of whom was to undergo surgery; and three people in the village of Lyakhovo in Domodedovo district were hurt but refused hospitalisation, the governor said. Meduza reported that three of the injured were in hospital. [ 4 , 7 , 8 ]

Ten private houses were damaged in Istra, in Safontyevo, Torlopovo, Gorki and Yadromino, along with outbuildings and two cars, according to Vorobyov. A private house caught fire in Lobanovo in Domodedovo, and another house was destroyed in Barybino, he added. [ 2 , 4 , 6 , 8 ]

Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that from the evening of 5 October, 650 drones flew toward the city and the region, most of them shot down “at the far lines”, with 105 destroyed on the approach to Moscow. Later he said air defences had shot down 29 more Ukrainian drones heading for Moscow. No other document in the set gives these figures. [ 8 ]

Ukrainian monitoring Telegram channels, as well as the Russian outlet Astra, citing photographs and video from witnesses, said there was a fire at the Volodarskaya linear production and dispatch station in the Moscow region. Open sources describe the facility as the largest oil depot in the Moscow region and a key supply hub for Moscow and the Moscow region, part of Transnefteprodukt. Local authorities did not report a fire, Meduza said. No other document mentions the facility. [ 8 ]

Kommersant noted earlier episodes in the region, saying that in August 2026 air-defence forces in the Moscow region destroyed more than 150 drones in a single day, and that in July 2026 the Ministry of Defence reported 385 drones shot down over Russian regions, 85 of them destroyed on the approach to Moscow. Kommersant said the data do not disclose which means were used for the interceptions. No other document mentions these episodes. [ 4 ]

Vorobyov described the casualty figures as preliminary and said work to deal with the aftermath of the drone attack was continuing, with residents receiving the necessary assistance. TASS reported that a hotline for those affected was opened in the Moscow region. [ 7 , 9 ]

Why it matters

The strike is a large-scale drone attack on the Moscow region, the area around the capital, and the reported damage reached homes in several districts. A reported fire at a facility described as the region's largest oil depot, if confirmed, would point to damage to fuel infrastructure as well as residential areas. Officials have given only preliminary casualty figures, and the full scale of the night remains unsettled.
