US President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social that the situation with mass migration in France has gotten out of control and that Islam, in his view, seeks to “take over” the country. “What is happening in France is nothing other than out-of-control mass migration. It is not about schools, it is that Islam wants to take over a once-great country!” he wrote, according to Vedomosti. TASS and RIA Novosti reported the same statement in short form, with TASS noting that Trump said the republic “wants to be taken over by Islam”. [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]
The statement was made against the backdrop of mass student protests in France. Vedomosti reported that the protests began in September in the suburbs of Paris and then spread across the country. On 5 October, French Education Minister Édouard Geffray said 190 schoolchildren had been injured since the protests began; some of the pupils were injured as a result of unrest and the use of pyrotechnics, he said. By that point, hundreds of participants in the actions had been detained in the country, Vedomosti reported. The same day, it was reported that 24 educational institutions in France had been burned or looted during the protests. Between 400 and 500 lycées decided to fully or partially suspend classes because they could not ensure safety. [ 1 ]
The Russian outlets did not report any reaction from the French authorities to Trump's remarks. TASS and RIA Novosti confined their coverage to the US president's post, while Vedomosti paired it with the figures from the French education minister and the reports of detentions and school closures. The remarks by the US president add an international political dimension to a domestic French dispute over school protests that have already injured students and damaged schools. Russian state outlets gave the statement wide and quick coverage, while the detailed protest toll came from a business outlet citing the French education minister.
