He won the American League ERA title in 1965 with a 2.18 ERA and made the first of his six All-Star Games that season, the outlet reported. According to Fox News, McDowell made his MLB debut at 18 but was out of baseball by 32 in 1975 because of alcohol abuse. Fox News reported that McDowell returned to college and became a licensed therapist in sports psychology and addictions, and later returned to baseball working for the Toronto Blue Jays and Texas Rangers. From 1987 to 2016 he served as an addiction and recovery consultant for the Baseball Assistance Team, the outlet said. It quoted him saying that the greatest thing that ever happened to him was that he was an alcoholic and found out about it, and that every day is a kick. [ 3 ]
