A US Congressional Research Service report updated on 5 October says 81 US military aircraft were damaged or destroyed since 28 February, when the US and Israel began military strikes on Iran. The report lists 12 F-15E fighters, two A-10 “Thunderbolt” attack aircraft, seven KC-135 tankers, one E-3 “Sentry” early-warning aircraft, one MQ-4C large reconnaissance drone and 45 MQ-9 “Reaper” drones among the losses, according to the Chinese outlets that carried the figures. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]
The report says its data came from news reports, the US Department of Defense, US Central Command and the Defense Department inspector general. China News Service reported that the report also says the figures could still change because of various factors. According to the report, Congress may consider whether to approve a funding request to repair or replace the damaged aircraft, and could use the losses to assess the threat from the war environment and enemy firepower and to judge whether US equipment, tactics or base posture need adjusting. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 5 ]
Jiemian and China News Service also cited an earlier Pentagon inspector general report published on 14 September — described as the first formal accounting of US equipment and facility losses during the war — covering 28 February to 30 June. That report said the Iran war caused major losses at US military bases and diplomatic missions in the Middle East, with at least hundreds of buildings and other facilities damaged and more than 50 US aircraft damaged or destroyed. Jiemian further cited a Congressional Budget Office estimate that the Defense Department spent about $38bn on the Iran war over five months up to 1 August. The documents do not explain how the 81 aircraft figure relates to the earlier count of more than 50. [ 2 , 5 ]
The three business outlets — CLS, Jiemian and Yicai — reported the same core figures, with Yicai citing CCTV News as its source, while Xinhua published the headline figure without accompanying text and China News Service carried an aggregated version. [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ]
Why it matters
The report gives Congress a basis for deciding whether to approve money to repair or replace the aircraft, and for reviewing how exposed US equipment and bases are to Iranian fire. It adds to a public accounting of the war's cost, after a Pentagon inspector general report on damage to bases and a congressional estimate of about $38bn in five months of spending.
